The above graphic is from an analysis of 2.9 million auto insurance applications, where the year, make, and model of the vehicle was disclosed, along with the state in which it’s registered.

So it's not just a look at the popularity of NEW cars. It's a tally of cars currently on the road, regardless of age.

Ranked by the number of states where the vehicle holds the number one spot, the most popular cars in the U.S. for 2021 are:

    1. Ford F-Series Pickup
    2. Honda Accord
    3. Honda Civic
    4. Nissan Altima
    5. Toyota Corolla
    6. Chevrolet Silverado
    7. Chevrolet Malibu
    8. Chevrolet Impala
    9. Toyota Tacoma
    10. Honda CR-V

Interesting: Altima was #1 last year

    Notable:

    • Regional preferences - Hondas tend to rule the coasts — Civic and Accord along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, respectively. Ford F-Series throughout middle America. Nissan Altima rules the gulf states.

    • Affordability - All of the cars have an MSRP below the national average of $37,851 by an average of $12,600.

I'd love to see a ranking of states where the most Mirages are sold.

I wonder if it has anything to do with how they doubled-down on ugly the past few years...

I suspect Camry sales have been just a hair behind the Accord in most of those states for years.

Here's another way to look at it:

These stats are for insurance applications. Which you could assume is different from renewals. What if Camry owners keep their cars forever (that's the stereotype - my parents fit it, btw), so that model may be more common, but has fewer application transactions.

We know Toyota dominates the list of cars that owners keep for 15+ years:

Toyota Camry outsells the Honda Accord every year in recent history (past 20 years or so) in the States.

Aha! So maybe that supports the theory that Accords change hands more often, thus causing more insurance applications.
