    * ... and all I had to do was dig & scrape snow for a few hours...

    Scale is 1:1.

Yeah, it looks more like a caricature of a Bug (I was aiming for accuracy), but I'm happy with how it turned out.

The neighbourhood loves it - while carving, I heard a LOT of old Bug stories from folks passing by. I've ridden in a couple (as a kid -- it was my favourite car) but have never driven one. One day!

Wow, you are a real visual artist, MetroMPG. Ever done ice carving? Looks like you have a talent.

I had a superbeetle with no motor at the same time I had a 1985 Rabbit Cabrio on the road. Some parts were interchangeable. Like the radio antenna was the same.

    You had a SuperBeetle??

Doing this actually made me want a classic Bug (again)... I actually did a search of local ads. Looks like you can get a pretty good one for about the price of a new Mirage.

My Dad had the Superbeetle shell. He had 4 Beetles before I was born.

    They're getting expensive!

    Cool! I would do that.

I've owned it for ~ 30ish years but was just able to do something with it the last 3 or 4 years..
It's more a referb than a restoration as it's far from perfect. This is a before pic...

I didn't modify it at all, just made it driveable. A whopping 48 HP (makes the Pumpkin feel like a rocket ship !!!)

    Fantastic!

One old-timer who stopped to chat while I was snow-carving said he had a late 50's vintage that had semaphore/wigwags on the B pillars for turn signals.

He said his engine HP was in the 20's. (Though he might have been joking about how tired the engine was when he got it.)

No he wasn't joking. The early ones were ~25ish HP. They didn't get into the 40HP range until the early 60"s. I also had an original Austin Mini that may have been 40ish HP as well, but it was a hoot to drive. I think you should take some water & food coloring out & give your bug a "paint job". Its too awesome to let it just melt away . This kinda makes me want to keep winter around so you can make people feel good with your "Snow Bug" You are a great artist!!!
