I googled misfit tranny forum but only came up with a bunch of shemale pornhub links.
I assume there should be enough cheap used 5 speeds to go around for a few more years.

Need to ship used ones from the southern US and stockpile them in the north. Northern ones die faster.

By the looks of the front tires, it wasn't driven by a "Mature" driver. Maybe that had something to do with the demise of the transmission???

Could be.
My current Mirage (#3, the white one) was its owner's FIRST ever car. So the trans and clutch took some abuse, and it shows. 2nd gear synchros are worn, and I figure the clutch is about done for, though it's not actually slipping yet @ 175k kms.

In these parts there a several cars that have virtually the same transmission as in the Mirage, same maker, but maybe just a different clutch lever or bell housing, or different teeth on the input shaft, etc. The popular Citroen C1 / Peugout 107 / Toyota Aygo for example. They have virtually the same manual transmission except for a few details. Manual transmissions are the norm here, automatics are uncommon and don't sell.
People here know how to drive a manual because the law mandates they are taught in driving school, and on manual transmissions.
Of course a manual transmission won't last if abused, and bad abuse does include lack of lubricant.
I filled mine with 100% synthetic 75W/80/GL4. Toyota recommends straight fully synthetic 75W/GL4 in their cars with almost identical transmission.
And you know what?
Manual transmission problems with these gearboxes are extremely rare, almost non-existant!
Grinding gears, in particular jamming gears instead of simply waiting for the synchro rings to do their job to let the gears simply plop in, all that can swiftly kill a transmission. In short, when a manual transmission fails, it has a history of heavy abuse! Badly working synchro rings are usually the first sign of abuse.
Here they say: Treat your equipment well, and it will treat you well.

With ambient temperatures hitting the freezing mark lately, the synchros in Mirage #3 are REALLY becoming irritating. This trans is in the worst condition of any I've ever owned in about 35 crapbox manual cars.
After a cold start, 2nd gear is very difficult to get, even with double-clutching. 1st and 3rd are occasionally slightly problematic too.
I've tried triple & quadruple shifting, but by the time I've successfully shifted, the car is going too slow to use 2nd gear any more!
Because it's so temperature sensitive, I'm wishing I could get Redline Manual Trans Lube (MTL) here in Canada, but it's just not available. Need thinner oil. And a transmission heater.
That'll teach me for buying a car someone learned to (tried to) drive stick on!

@ MetroMPG: An alternative could be to use straight 75W/GL4, which is usually thinner in the cold than 75W/80. Lacking even that if its all that bad, remove about 0,5L gearbox oil and top up with ATF. Unless of course, you want to open it up and replace the synchro rings.

When I was a Mechanic in a Ford dealership many years ago, we used to put a Friction Modifier in the Tempo / Escort 5 speeds (see, it was a long time ago ) to help them shift easier. Ford part # C8AZ-19B546-A. It was also used to condition the clutches in Locking rear axles that were " sticky when turning slow, sharp corners ". Your FLAPS should have something the same, too. I don't know if it will help, but may be worth a try, just for Giggles...
