Motor Trend Alisa Priddle talks to Mitsubishi global design chief Seiji Watanabe

Will Future Mitsubishis Look as Good as the 2022 Outlander? published May 3, 2021

excerpt: "Watanabe says Mitsubishi will not be an SUV-only brand—it has a compact pickup truck for other parts of the world and still sells the 78-hp Mirage here, in addition to assorted sizes of SUVs. But don't expect a return of the Eclipse, Evo, or a next-generation Mirage."

No more refreshes for the Mirage? I guess that's it then for our cars. I wonder what year they will discontinue the Mirage? 2025? Call it a 12 year run?

Yeah, "all good things", right? I don't know; given that gas prices are going back up now, I would think there should still be interest in an affordable car that gets good mileage.

Maybe they're going to make an HR-V/C-HR type of vehicle. Mirage Cross, anyone?

Maybe a new Nissan Versa hatch that's really a Mitsu design underneath. I wouldn't consider the new 2022 Outlander because it's really a Nissan Rogue, but I'd consider Rogue if it was a Mitsu designed powertrain. Wishful thinking.......

Mitsubishi's first pure electric car will be a micro or kei car for Japan. It has said Mitsubishi will expand its electrified lineup to half of its global sales by 2030.
The kei cars in Japan are awesome. It makes total sense, especially if you've been to Tokyo and the other cities surrounding Tokyo. On top of that, gas prices in Tokyo as well. So, I can see a hard push for electric kei cars in that market.

Watanabe says he talks with Nissan design chief Alfonso Albaisa, as well as the head of Renault design, about future products to ensure each brand keeps its unique image and strengths in terms of looks, technology, and performance. Information is only shared at the design-head level, he says, "to avoid a similar direction."

This is really important but at the same time, reminds me of the DSM era of vehicles too, where everything mechanically would basically be "the same" from Mitsubishi/Nissan/Renault.. MNR? hehe.

It's a huge bummer that they're not revamping the next gen Mirages. But the market does what it does. I can understand from their point of view. A LOT of Mitsu enthusiasts want the Montero and other sport cars but the market is just not strong enough (right now) for that. Mitsu definitely needs to refine their brand more because most people still see Mitsubishi as a "unreliable" car company (my FIL and MIL thinks so, and does my older relatives lol) I think once our 2011 Outlander Sport decides to literally rot away, then, we'll pick up another Outlander PHEV. A PHEV just makes sense right now but ugh, I dread the electronics lol

Same. But usually the company with the controlling interest doesn't re-badge a lot of their product. I.e. Daimler/Chrysler. I think a 2021 Outlander would be a good pick up, as most of the bugs had been worked out over the years.
