Mirage value increasing! (Used Mirage prices up $2k+ in last year)

    https://tflcar.com/2021/05/chip-shor...-prices-study/

While the average transaction prices across the 1.2 million used cars iSeeCars analyzed went up 16.8% [...] the top 10 “worst” used buys includes the Mitsubishi Mirage which went up 25.% [or $2313].

Mind you, the Mirage is still by far the cheapest used buy on this end of the spectrum.

Check out prices of used Mirages on Carmax, Carvanna, etc. Crazy. Too bad they won't buy your used one for anywhere near what they are trying to sell them for.

Here are 2015 Mirages at Carmax today...

If consumers can just hold off a few months hopefully the market will stabilize.

Those prices seem sort of nuts for those of us that have been interested in these cars for the past few years.

A person's best bet for a good deal is finding someone interested in trading in their Mirage for something else, & they aren't happy with what the dealership is offering them in trade. Thus, they try to do a private party sale of their Mirage instead. Those cars exist, but finding a manual one like that is a challenge.

Once the dealer has the used Mirage, the price is going up!

Wow. Six-year-old cars that every critic loved to hate with 50k miles are now selling for 100% of what they cost new.

It is a mad, mad, mad world!

I'm in Canada, so my opinion doesn't really matter much, but I would say that those prices would "in theory", or in Carmax's logic, put my own 2014 Mirage base, used as-is, in the price range of around $6,000 USD.

If I traded in my 2014 Mirage ES base hatchback at the local Hyundai dealer for example, here in Canada like, they would give me like $650. They will low ball it to no end. So I will never trade in my Mirage, but instead consider interesting trades, PM me once you can do cross border business. Not sure how much cash you can bring over the border.

A 7 year old 2x4 went up in value way more than a Mirage. $10 for an 8’ 2x4 at the local homeless depot. I can count to 10 so I figure my opinion matters.

    chip shortage, or fuel economy?

The article tries to frame used car price increases in terms of the computer chip shortage affecting new car production, which is skewing prices in the used marketplace as well.

But as they like to sing on Sesame Street, "one of these things is not like the others..."

These are the vehicles with the highest year-over-year increase in used transaction prices.

The Mirage's inclusion in that last stands out like a sore thumb.

    Why is it there?

Of all those cars, demand for the Mirage would be most affected by above average [and rising] fuel prices:

I'm no expert. But I'll put my $0.02 worth in. I think it is being affected by a number of things. This gas shortage we had wherever it effected (I know the southeast was), really scared people. The chip shortage and seeing much emptier car lots (chip shortage), causes concern, and with lower available new cars, used cars become more in-demand. The upward march of fuel prices. These main things have made many people consider a best way to deal with it is to have a less expensive vehicle to operate. I'm just glad I got mine when I did.

Hey, do my fellow Americans remember ten or so years ago when the government spent $3,000,000,000 to destroy 690,000 running and driving used cars for no particular reason?

Be great if we had those cars back!
