    Question Wider Tires

    Hi Good day!

I was wondering if a 205 60 R13 would be ok on a VX Rims and i wont have issues once installed?

    The previous i have was a 175 70 R13.

It looks like they may fit. Outside diameter is right around 22.7 inches. Most of your clearance issues will revolve around rim width and offset. Just a FYI for other forum members, 13 inch rims will fit on the 2014-2015 Mirages, not on the 2017 on up. I've thought about dropping to 13 inch rims because 13 inch tires are stupid cheap.

Restating the obvious & adding a bit more -

Since factory tires are either 22.4" or 22.6" outside diameter, a 22.7" tire is no big deal.

A wider tire on a small lightweight car, however, will reduce your traction. A 165-185 width tire is probably ideal for a Mirage. When you put a really wide tire on a car like a Mirage, you are reducing the tire's downward pressure on the road. Hydroplaning may become more of an issue, and snow traction would be horrible. Too much of anything is usually not good, and that can apply to tire width.

As far as 13" tires being "stupid cheap" - I don't find that to be the case for 205/60r13 tires in my area. Walmart offers one tire in that size ($163/tire), & it's not a tire I would use on the average road surface.

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Toyo-Prox...-Tire/56097572

Whereas Walmart offers 59 different 175/70r13 (22.6") tires choices.

155/80r13 (22 affordable options @ Walmart) or 175/70r13 (59 options, but many are out-of-stock) would be the most common 13" tire sizes for small cars. A person could make up a tire size like a 165/75r13 (22.7"), but no one makes that tire (it would be extremely rare at least).

Do you have a good 205/60r13 tire picked out already, because that would be an odd tire size here in the States?

Here's a couple of examples in the 175/70R13 which the OP was originally running. They are nominally taller than 165/65R14.

WallyWorld is out of stock currently but here is the price for Douglas Brand in that size:

That's why I stated there are 59 different options at Walmart for that size. The same cannot be said of a 205/60r13 tire, however.

Looking at 175/70r13 tire is not much different than looking at 175/65r14 tires (94 options @ Walmart today). You can buy a 175/65r14 Douglas tire for $38 & Westlake for $41. Overall, tire prices are higher than normal, too! Plus, you can most likely buy a brand you may have bought in the past. For me that would be Cooper tires.

I've stated this several times already - North American Mirages should come stock with 175/65r14 (23") or 185/55r15 (23") tires. I don't say this because this would be the best tire size for the Mirage. I say this because they are a common tire size made/sold in the United States, & they are the exact same tire diameter, too!

    i used a 175/70 r13 because the original tires was the 175/55/r15.

now i was wondering if the 205/60 r13 would fit well and have any difference with the 175/70 r13.

@inuvik yes 13" worked for my mirage since its a 2015 model.

205/60r13 would be a wide tire for a Mirage. 205 wide tires are found small SUV type vehicles like the Chevy Trax or Ford Ecosport. 205 wide tire supports the weight of these type of vehicles quite well. Put a much wider tire on these small SUV vehicles and they would have more hydroplaning issues & become useless in snow, too.

205/60r13 would also be a very strange tire size for our market. 205 wide tires are more commonly found on 16" or 17" rims.

I think you found a really good match with the 175/60r13 tires you already have. 175 is actually a wide tire for a 13" rim. My 1990 Ford Festiva had 12" rims with 145 wide tires. A 155 tires was considered a wider upgrade for a 12" rim.

Like you mentioned, your current 175/60r13 tires match up with factory 175/55r15 tires quite well.

But to answer your question -

    175/70r13 compared to 205/60r13.

    Outside diameter is almost the same (22.6" vs 22.7"). That's a variance of 0.4%. A factory 165/65r14 & 175/55r15 tire have a larger variance (0.9%) than that!

    Width is 6.9" vs 8.1". That's a variance of 17.4%.

You will have to factor in rim offset & other factors, too.

Like I already said, 205 wide tires are found on larger, heavier vehicles (small SUV or crossover vehicles). My 2000 Honda CR-V had 205 wide tires. My heavier 2011 Subaru Forester has 215 wide tires.

I really don't believe 205+ wide tires belong on a vehicle like a Mirage, but that's a bit subjective on my part, too! I don't see any benefit with going that wide (only negatives). The one exception would be your Mirage may not sink as much when driving across your lawn. Other than that, it's not going to improve your traction or much else.

Thanks much! its much clearer now which size to use.
