    Oil consumption ?

    Hi guys i have an 2015 1.2 5 speed with 65,000 miles

lately it seems like its beginning to consume oil pretty rapidly. Not exactly sure how much but i have to top it off midway between oil changes or it will go below the add hole on the stick. Started over the last 10k miles or so.

Anyone else having this issue? Did it lead to anything bigger, or get worse as time went on?

That is unusual for the 3A92 to consume a lot of oil. Generally the engine has been very rock solid with very very few complaints of oil burning or failure. If you are the original owner you still have powertrain warranty left.

My white 2014 used a little bit of oil between changes. I can't remember how much. It was also noisy, like lifter noise. Took it to the dealer this spring said it uses oil and it's noisy. They confirmed the noise and threw a new engine in it. All the recalls were up to date before I took it in.

In the fleet, the highest mileage car started to use about 1/2 Liter after about 5000km(3000miles?). That started at around 250-300,000km though iirc.
We do have one 2017 that does use oil with 281,000kms. It's done that for a few years now. It'll drink about 1/2 liter in 2500 km.
I haven't noticed any oil consumption in the rest.

When I changed my oil at 100,000 miles (5,000 miles since my last oil change), my oil level was 1/2 a pint below the "full" hole on the dipstick. This is with 5W30 Mobil-1 synthetic.

So my 100K mile engine is consuming about 1 cup of oil in 5,000 miles. I'm OK with that. I don't think I noticed I was using any oil between oil changes until my car had more than 75,000 miles.

Remember that the amount of oil represented by the 2 holes on the dipstick is only a pint...

I usually pour in 1/2 liter....1/2 quart....1 pint when it's at the lower hole. Close enough.

My car has 182,000 miles on it now and it drinks a bit of oil as well. Started doing it around 100,000 miles. I never really bothered to determine exactly how much it uses or how fast, but every few thousand miles I have to put in about 1/8-1/4 of a quart.

    Not a big deal.

My 100k mile mirage consumes very little (if any at all). I wonder if I'm doing anything wrong...

Mine at 450 miles total is doing good.. It should though, as it's new. But the first oil change will be soon.

Cobrajet - I agree with you. Not a big deal. I wonder though, I'm guessing the means of burning oil is likely through piston-piston ring / cylinder bore wear, and oil making its way up past the piston rings. Or through the valve guides. It doesn't really matter, I just wonder if maybe Fummins might have a guestimate through his engine tear downs, if he might have been able to tell.
