    Air Conditioning (Compressor) Whining Noise...

    Guys,

I've been meaning to post this for a while. And I did a search, but found nothing directly related. Of course, I'm not the best searcher. And, the fact is, because it is referred to as A/C, or AC, or air conditioning it makes it a little tough to know you've seen all responses. Anywho...

Since day 1, the Blueberry / Lil' Big Rig has made quite a whining noise from the compressor (noise is under the hood). I can certainly live with it. But I did want to make sure the noise is "normal." Because I'd rather not have a defective compressor. I still have plenty of warranty. And of course it is the compressor because turning the little snowflake on and off directly corresponds.

Mine makes a bit of noise all the time (when A/C is on), but it is an especially audibly pronounced whine between maybe 3,000 rpm and 3,400 rpm.

All I really want to know is if it is normal. If so, case closed, I can live with it. If I had time, I'd go by a Mitsubishi dealer and ride in a new one to see if it does it too. But the closest one is probably 20 miles away. And it's 400 turns, 300 stop lights, and always heavy traffic densely populated with people who are not paying attention. It is a highly unattractive place through which to have to drive.

If you can record a short video and post it here that would be helpful so everyone can hear what you are referring to.

I was wondering why 20 miles was so inconvenient. It makes sense now lol.
Like inuvik said, try to post a vijeo. I personally haven't noticed compressors make noise like you're describing. A few people on the forum have had the clutch on the compressor crap out though.

To be honest, I don't think this is a sound you would need to hear from a recording. You either hear it, or you don't. It's very obvious.

But without a recording, you know sometimes riding down the road there are some surfaces that clearly bring out specific tire noises. Then the abnormal surface ends and the noise immediately ends. This is that kind of noise. Like driving over a bridge that may have those (I don't know the official description) grates. Looks like water can fall through. And tires make noise over them. It's that kind of noise. Not quite that loud, but that sort of describes the obviousness of it.

I don't see how I could reasonably capture the sound and drive. But I'll put some thought into it.

There's other reasons as well. I would prefer it if the Mirage were bullet proof, I just made sure my "uninsured motorist" premium were all paid up and in effect, and if I were in the mood to tolerate a complete lack of consideration to the importance of not being involved in motor vehicle accident ... then I would be more apt take a spin over there.

Make sure your belt is correctly tensioned... Mine made Funky noises until I tensioned as per https://mirageforum.com/forum/showth...-Tension-Howto Also verify the sound you hear is just not your cooling fan running???
I didn't know what to do, so I didn't do anything

Some engines have an issue that the belt flaps back and forth incredibly fast between the alternator and crank. The extra load with the compressor clutch engaged and hitting that rpm range could be your noise. I believe it's a TSB for dealers at this point and eventually under warranty they'll replace all the pulleys and belt. I experienced it with a Continental belt after I replaced my OEM belt and couldn't resolve it after about a dozen changes to tension. Replaced with a Gates belt and solved the issue. Not saying this is your problem, but could be.
