I wrote on the flywheel. The other blueish markings on the block are from the factory. It’s the original engine. I bought the car from the original owner. I didn’t even notice any marking on the engine I installed. Maybe they stamped it but I didn’t notice any wrecker marking. Just some tags zip tied to it.

Wonder what the root cause was? The other bearings don't look too bad.

Thanks for taking the time to tear it down...keep the pics coming.

I gotta be honest... that looks exceptional. Cam lobes are sharp, minimal surface wear. ZERO sludge.

Makes me wonder if there is an oiling issue in the main journals?

Regardless, it makes me think that those of us who have ideas of stockpiling these cars in the future might want to keep some rod and main bearings on hand. And better yet, use this knowledge that new bearings alone can fix an effered engine.

    Thanks Fummins. Great info.

I also wonder what the root cause was!

Of course 290 000km is more than most engines last, and it does look clean as if the oil was always changed in time, but the bearings and crankshaft look like they were telling a story of inferior oil. Very strange.

If there had been significant amounts of fuel in the crankcase, my assumption would be that there would have been wear damage in other areas of the engine besides the rod journals. I'd have to go back and look through all the pictures, but rod journal wear is all I remember. I don't have any good theories, just theories. It just sort of looks like those bearings did all they could do, and plum gived out.

This vehicle is made to be inexpensive. Perhaps some penny pinching went on with bearing selection. I dunno. I can only guess.

Another guess would be that lugging (long term exposure) could maybe beat up on some rod / crank bearings (mainly rod bearings I guess). Does the CVT tend to lug the engine?

Generally yes compared to the 5 speed.

It's a little late now, but an oil analysis on this one would have been interesting.
