Just sold my 2000 Chevy Metro 1.0/5-spd. Gone in 60 minutes! Fastest sale ever.

My 2000 Metro winter beater is gone.

And I have NEVER seen so much interest when selling a car before (in several decades of selling about a car a year).

    Details:

    - 230k km = 143k mi.
    - I was completely transparent in the ad: needs front exhaust w/cat, rotors, axle (CV joint gone), maybe an inner tie rod. Clutch has at least one broken damper spring. EVAP leak check-engine light. Summer tires have lots of tread, but cracks in the sidewalls.

    Sold for: $750, non-negotiable.

Within 30 minutes of posting it on FB marketplace, I had several legitimate contacts, and several more legit contacts through Kijiji within the next couple of hours.

The buyer came to look at it within the hour with cash in hand. And I even said "no test drives" (it's not plated/insured).

I could have sold it 3 times over yesterday.

Clearly I could have asked for more money. But I didn't want to waste time with tire-kickers / negotiators.

Also, I only paid $1000 for it in 2017.

The buyer is a mid-20's car guy who showed up in a slammed old Lexus V8 sedan. He was SO excited, it was hilarious! "I've wanted one of these forever!"

Could it be that Metros are now seen as ironically cool old cars by a subset of today's yoots? Radwood influence, I'm thinking.

That Metro looks like my Mirage, weirdly.

There will always be a demand for mpgs. I really didn't have too much trouble selling my '97 3/5 when I bought my Mirage back in 2014, either.

I bought it the day after Christmas, 2010, for $600. I drove it for almost 4 years and put 110,000 miles on it. I replaced or rebuilt nearly everything...at least once...including replacing the 'cancerous' dashboard the '95-'97 Metros were infamous for.

I sold it for $2750, which, not counting labor, was about what I had into it. After the buyer and I had completed the deal, I asked him why he was buying it. He said, "They don't make cars this light that get this kind of mileage anymore."

I nodded, and fought the urge to point at the brand new 2000 pound, 3-cylinder, 5-speed, 40 mpg hatchback on the other side of the driveway!

Cobrajet: your old Geo is in amazing shape, and you got a lot of life out of that red car.

MetroMPG can clarify this point, but I'm pretty sure all the small Suzuki/Geo cars- such as your red car, were assembled in Ingersoll, Ontario's GM plant. The place is huge, there is an A&W nearby, and sitting in the restaurant you can see the whole plant from the vantage point where the restaurant sits. Anyways cool car, I was looking at a superbeetle with no engine earlier

Not all the Geos - but all the North American Metros/Swifts/Fireflies were made there, except the convertibles. And some Trackers etc.

Did you get the engine-less super Beetle?

    That is funny.

Back then there weren't yet any $2700 Mirages on the market, but they're around now (or I should say they will be again when the used car market returns to normal).

Cool!! Those are very fun, capable cars. 100 hp 1.3L 4-cyl twin cam & ~1700 lbs. I had a chance to drive one at a track day.

Being from lesser known Suzuki, it's only worth a fraction of the money people are paying for comparable Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans & Mazdas of the same era.

    I had one...

Was just a parts car, though. Underbody rusted beyond belief.

Pic is of the new owner of the engine, who bought it to use in an ultralight airplane. We lifted it out of the car with that 4x4 beam.
