I don't think the FWD drivetrain of a Ford Maverick will share much in common with the robust 4WD drivetrain of the F150 (or Ranger). Even the small AWD Ford Ecosport has the same 2,000 pound towing capacity as the Maverick.

If you want a FWD hybrid vehicle with a small box in the back, the Maverick is for you! I see no need to judge others who would prefer something else.

First good, thorough review I've seen on the hybrid version of the thing. Interesting takeaways:

-The reviewer got 42 mpg on 150 miles in 85 F weather. This was with 25% in city and 75% highway driving with the AC cranked. Ford is saying 37-38 combined with highway mileage being worse. It's clear that drivers here would stubbornly be able to get 45+ out of it in similar conditions. It's damn good. I'm guessing the 37 is what we might get in cold weather as I generally have a hard time getting around 38-40 mpg out of my mirage in cold weather conditions.

-On the note of fuel economy, near the end of the video he tows about 2000 lbs for 15 or so miles in mixed driving conditions and achieves 28 mpg. Hilariously, the weight of the mirage. Tow a mirage and have an 10 seater at 28 mpg? haha

-The drive train is neither traditional gears or CVT. The car has a planetary gear set with 2 electric motors that act like a transmission. The electric motors are attached directly into the drive train and is always in use, so if the car needs to go in reverse, it just runs the electric motors in reverse. Since there are so few moving parts as there pretty much isn't a transmission, this has potential to be tremendously reliable.

-The battery is liquid cooled and not air cooled like regular nimh batteries. This along with the way the electric motor is implemented, the acceleration and breaking is apparently very responsive, more so than competitors.

-On the negative side, the base model is intentionally hampered in some ways to make it unattractive, in the same way that that base version of the mirage with no AC was. Base Maverick has no cruise control, and a lot of tech safety features which I care less about. It should have cruise control. That's silly for me, but smart for them as it would force me to go one trim level up as I would really want cruise control.

So yeah, if the real world use holds true, the mileage is what they say it is, and the transmission is as robust as it appears it might be due to just a good design, i think this might be my next 300000-500000 km a couple years from now. Never thought I'd willingly buy American any time soon. I think this thing is going to be a bigger hit than even they were anticipating, which is probably going to lead to a pretty good second hand market; apparently there's already 100000 pre-orders.

I shouldn't have waited this long to order one... now I'm in that limbo area of talking myself into waiting.

The CC thing bothers me too, but I want the basey base XL and I figure you can retrofit the XLT steering wheel or if nothing else Rostra will come through with one at some point.

I'm probably just going to wait for a used one to pop up. The thing about cars with a low insertion price is it generally makes the resale kind of linked to that price. I would expect a used XLT to pop up in a year for probably less than the XLs price, or at least less freight. Probably either from some fleet use, or, a truck buyer that didn't realize he'd need more payload. If you could wait 2, you'd be getting all of the leased cars coming off lease, which will absolutely be driven like miss daisy.

200 k on the mirage, I'm guessing I could get another year or two out of the thing. Here's hoping.

I'm still up in the air about my next vehicle.

    Required:
    Lane Keep Assist
    Auto Cruise Control
    Heated seats
    Comfortable for 6' person

    Preferred:
    Keyless start
    Ventilated seats
Tow hitch (for bike rack and around-town towing for larger items)
    Hybrid/PHEV

I'm looking at anywhere from large subcompact SUVs (Kia Seltos) through midsize SUVs (Outlander PHEV) and unibody trucks (Santa Cruz). Also add Civic hatch, Audi A5 (4door), BMW X1/X3, MB GLB, Porsche Macan, Lexus NX PHEV

    Edit:
Since this vehicle may be used as a daily (60mi daily round trip) - I may shoot for the mainstream side of things. When the wife's TT gets paid off, and we have a kid, we can work on a luxury spectrum.

I'm looking at anywhere from large subcompact SUVs (Kia Seltos - CRAP) through midsize SUVs (Outlander PHEV - NOT BAD) and unibody trucks (Santa Cruz - CRAP). Also add Civic hatch - GOOD, Audi A5 (4door) - MAJOR CRAP, BMW X1/X3 - DOUBLE MAJOR CRAP, MB GLB - CRAP MIXED WITH VOMIT, Porsche Macan - GOOD
    All in good fun.

Probably not the best to be throwing shade at car choices on the Mitsubishi Mirage forum hahaha. We've gotten enough of that from outside.

Luckily for us tall guys, i dont think there is a modern car (sports cars notwithstanding) that aren't comfortable anymore. At least for the driver.

Also, i haven't looked at new cars since this, but it looks like tech features like you've outlined have actually gotten pretty cheap.

Yea eh I hear you there. I am finding the Mirage less comfy as I get older. When I was 31 I was fine, and my then-new Mirage was itself was a huge upgrade, from any other car I owned (80s VW with no power steering, 90s Ford Escort...).

Now I'm almost 40 years old, still 6' tall, just a little bit less agile haha.

You know what else gets me about the Mirage? I Feel like I get the odd big truck attacking me on the road. Just yesterday I had someone in the oncoming traffic, literally get into my lane 10 inches, trying to intimidate me. Maybe they were changing their radio station? Awful feeling though.

Other than that death-trap feeling, is just wanting more comfort now, having a car with cruise control, a car with AC, etc.

Love my Mirage, hate the hate it seems to attract sometimes! As I have said again, maybe I will replace my Mirage with a tank.

I remember buying/installing a FM converter for my Dad's 1978 Chevy Scottsdale pickup truck's AM radio & thinking that was a major upgrade.

I would probably pay extra to NOT have every feature listed above, except for the comfortable for a 6' person & tow hitch. There's nothing wrong with liking all those features, however. That's why different trim levels are important I guess.

The need for heated seats in Houston? How cold does it get there? I have never felt cold in a cloth seat, & I have lived in Wisconsin my entire life.

There's nothing wrong with liking extra features, it's really important to some. I think I learned that from Eggman! If I buy a vehicle with a working radio, that's sort of nice. If it didn't have one, I would be ok with that, too! This forum has made me realize why even a base level Mirage is fairly well equipped in the States. I am an odd duck & surely not the norm!

At age 58, I would rather exercise more than complain about my Mirage. I don't care what others drive, & I don't care what others think. I just know that I feel good driving a nice, affordable economy car. I am never embarrassed filing up my Mirage at the gas pump next to most other vehicles parked there.

My brother owns a full size GMC pickup truck. Towing a relatively large fishing boat is important to him. He also likes to take his ATV or UTV to various lakes to ice fish. I don't question him owning a full size pickup truck. Likewise, I don't think my brother (who lives 7 miles from my parents & work) questions me owning an economy car to visit my parents (220 miles one way for me).

As gas prices continue to slowly climb up, I think I am looking better & smarter in my Mirage every day. For those who think otherwise, they can go suck on an egg or something!
