Mitsubishi Motors Vehicles Win Multiple Awards from the Automotive Science Group (ASG) for their Outstanding Environmental, Economic and Social Performance Scores

    Tue, Feb 04, 2014 - Cypress, California -

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA) is proud to announce an award-winning trifecta for three of the company's most popular models - the all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-door and the 2014 Outlander and Outlander Sport crossovers - by the Automotive Science Group (ASG).

The highly fuel-efficient all-new 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage has been named as the ASG's 2014 "Best All-Around Performance Award" winner - the organization's highest award - along with the 2014 "Best Environmental Performance Award" in the Mini-Compact Class for the 2014 model year.

According to the ASG, the all-new 2014 Mirage "performed exceptionally well against the competition in areas of environmental, social and economic performance, the three fundamentals of ASG's proprietary automotive life-cycle assessment platform - the Automotive Performance Index™". Furthermore, the ASG's analysis, "found the Mirage to hold the smallest environmental footprint, not only in its class, but also of any conventionally powered model year 2014 automobile available in the North American market."

Additionally, the ASG named both the all-new 7-passenger 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander and the 5-passenger 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport crossover models as ASG 2014 "Best 5 All-Around Performance Award" winners for the Mid-Size SUV class and the Crossover SUV class, respectively. The ASG's "Best 5 All-Around Performance Award" is presented to the top five automobiles in each vehicle class that the organization determines to achieve the highest combined environmental, economic and social performance scores.

"It is very satisfying to see three of our most popular vehicles - the 2014 Mirage, Outlander and Outlander Sport - win meaningful awards such as the ones presented by the Automotive Science Group," said Don Swearingen, Executive Vice President of Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., "but it is especially gratifying to know that Mitsubishi Motors customers own and drive vehicles that are among the very best in the industry in such important areas as environmental sustainability, affordability/cost of ownership and in social responsibility."

Based in Santa Rosa, California, the Automotive Science Group (ASG) performs data-driven automobile assessments based on thousands of algorithmic calculations and data points to determine the award winners. In 2014, the ASG evaluated over 1,300 light-duty vehicles to trim level detail using the organization's proprietary automotive life-cycle assessment platform, the Automotive Performance Index™. The Index utilizes a combination of conventional specifications along with environmental, economic and social performance indicators.

There's no doubt that a Mirage is more green than, say, a Prius.

    winner again for 2018

    Highlights:

    • Mirage hatch & G4 sedan have smallest carbon impact of conventional drivetrains available in the U.S., on par with some hybrids
    • Lowest cost of ownership & "best economic performance" of all 2018 model year vehicles sold in the U.S.
    • Among all automakers, Mitsubishi judged the Best Economic Performance Brand and Best All-Around Performance Brand of 2018.

While ASG’s study reveals that these advanced powertrains are largely responsible for leading significant fleet fuel economy gains in 2018, there is one notable model with a conventional powertrain that is a standout in the API. ASG found the Mitsubishi Mirage to hold the smallest life-cycle carbon footprint of any conventional powertrain, at 301 grams CO2-e per mile driven life-time - this is on par with the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron and Ford Fusion Hybrid at 297 grams and 295 grams respectively.

But the Mirage holds an ace when compared to these models, it also holds claim to the lowest cost of ownership and best economic performance of any model year 2018 car in the North American market, earning ASG’s Best Economic Performance award for the second consecutive year. The Mirage maximizes the fundamentals of utility - with sizable passenger volume, a light-weight design, and a fuel efficient 1.2 liter inline 3-cylinder engine that achieves 39 MPG combined, the best MPG rating of any 2018 vehicle without hybrid or electric capabilities.

Mitsubishi has found a winning combination that it has implemented across its North American lineup, one that adheres to the engineering principles embodied in the Mirage – Mitsubishi builds cars and SUVs with a streamlined light-weight vehicle architecture, with fuel efficient engines that reduce operating costs and carbon emissions, and with MSRP’s that cut the competition. By adding a Plug-in powertrain to the 2018 Outlander SUV, Mitsubishi reveals a smart path for a brand with boundless potential.

In ASG’s data-driven brand assessment, ASG assessed all model year 2018 vehicles under 33 brands, to identify the consistency of performance across all brand offerings. ASG found Mitsubishi models with the highest consistent performance across all models, earning Mitsubishi the Best Economic Performance Brand and Best All-Around Performance Brand of 2018.
The plug-in Prius won their overall award.

    Thanks Metro..
It's nice to see the value of this car beyond a little wind noise and sluggish merging.
    Will weld for beer.
