Thread: Clacky 2015

    Clacky 2015

There's this car that's been using oil and getting pretty clacky. It sounded like top end noise but who knows...It wasn't a good look. So out it came and I tossed in a different engine. Car runs great now. I went to tear down the old engine and started to question if the engine even needed to be replaced(I'll post a poor quality video showing that later).

Here's what it sounded like before, what do you guys think the noise is?

And here’s a teardown video of this engine (it identifies as a yellow 2021 in the thumbnail)

So that sound doesn't go away (or get quieter) when it warms up?

It didn't go away when warm. A few other cars here sound a bit like my first 2014 did. This one in the video was different, sounded like lifter noise to me but echoed under the car.

No. Just showing how hilariously tiny they are. I lost my long t50 so can't get the head off or the pistons out. They won't come out the bottom. So far everything looked to be in great shape. I'm hoping to find at least a crappy wrist pin.

Wonder if you will find something similar to what this guy found.

Sounds a bit like piston slap. Since you already have the bottom open, maybe you can grab a conrod as high up as possible and yank and shake it vigorously to check for excessive play from worn piston skirts?

I noticed the timing cover on the 2015+ Mirages doesn't have the access plate for the timing chain tensioner that my 2014 engine had. I ordered a long t50 so hopefully I'll get that head off next week and check out the piston and rod for wear.
The water pump in this one has a bad bearing, it's in rough shape but wasn't leaking. At least not enough to drip. At first, I thought maybe that was the noise but after reviewing the video a few times, I don't think it was.

Crappy wrist pin found. And some wear on the piston skirts, I wish I was more careful when pulling this one apart, probably could have slapped a different piston and rod in there and slapped it back in after a quick valve adjustment.
