I have no plans for our 2015 to leave the family but when the final year of this generation Mirage is announced I'm gonna pull the trigger one more time. Last of the last econobox.

That's not a bad plan. Hmmmmm, you've got me thinking. I can put the 2nd one in the bed of my truck to keep it out of the way until I'm ready to use it.

I can see it now: 10 Mirage forum members fighting over the last new 5-speed Mirage available in North America.

Yeah, maybe we let White Bear in on our plan, so they can make all 10 of us happy. I think I want a yeller one.

    Seems like sound logic.

But let's not forget that the Mirage was never really meant to be a US/Canada product. Sales here have been dwarfed by sales in its most important market: Southeast Asia. Whatever ultimately happens to the car, the decision will be made based on factors there.

    We're really just an afterthought.

We saw the European Micra with the very good Nissan 16V 1.0L engine and its lousy rust protection. Then it got a Renault power plant, but retained the similar rustiness. Renault have a rustiness reputation of their own.
If we now see the same happening with Renault engineering "quality" in Mitsubishi, I shall certainly not buy one.

Mitsubishis had a reputation for being rust buckets, I'm pretty sure the new ones are rust buckets in the Northern regions where lots of salt is used on the roads. There's an RVR turquoise SUV lives near me, and I haven't been close to it, and I can litterally see the rust on the rear panels as it drives by my house. Plus I've seen rusty rear hatch doors on RVRs in grocery store parking lots. No better or worse than my friend's Focus same year as my Mirage.

Third anecdote was the story of my coworker's mom's 1 year old RVR. If you don't rust-proof with the drippy stuff that gets into the nuts and bolts, good luck.

    Is Renault that bad?

If you call a Mitsubishi a rust bucket, I wouldn't know what you would call a Renault, but its not just that, because any car has to last long enough in the first place to develop a rust problem. Nothing for me and much the opposite of Mitsubishi. Since Nissan was taken over, Renault has received definite improvement though. Nissan seems to have become more Renault-like. I don't want to say more in public.

The ratio between available 2nd hand cars and real old 2nd cars might tell something about the durability of a brand. I collected some numbers on gaspedaal.nl:

Brand For sale From which older than 30 years Ratio More than 250000km Ratio
    Renault 24505 132 0.5% 962 4%
    Mercedes 22430 1201 5% 2363 10.5%
    Mitsubishi 3741 12 0.3% 196 5.2%
    Toyota 17332 83 0.5% 540 3.1%
    Subaru 1023 4 0.4% 93 9%
    Nissan 9089 46 0.5% 198 2.2%
    Rolls-Royce 100 57 57% 0 0%
    VW 38697 477 1.2% 2235 5.8%
    Mazda 6155 38 0.6% 175 2.8%

From this table you could conclude that Mitsubishi is the worst of all, and Renault, Mazda, Nissan and Subaru don't differ much. Of course this can be biased by the popularity of the brand now and 30 years (and more) ago. And it tells something about the quality 30 years ago, while the quality of the last 10 years hardly has any impact.

Further it's clear that English brands are the best.
