Thread: Upgraded rotors & brake pads

    I can see how bigger front brake pads would give me the comfort of possibly shorter emergency stops, but since I try to brake as lightly as possible in all other circumstances, I can't imagine how I would get a brake fluid boil.

    Can I assume that larger pads make contact with a wider surface area of the rotor, and therefore one might get slightly longer life out of the stock rotor?

    What all is required to upgrade to the larger diameter? Just replace the entire drum assembly?

    Regardless of pad "size", brake calipers positioned 5" off the hub have 25" more effective braking force than those positioned 4" off the hub, simply due to leverage.

    Adjust the math for whatever size rotors you are considering versus whatever size you currently have.

    For the front, going from the HB rotor to the G4 rotor only requires replacing the caliper support. While at the rear drum, you might have to replace the whole brake drum assembly altogether.

    There are fellows who have used ceramic pads like Loren, Cobrajet, Fummins to name a few and all of them say there's a noticeable improvement in braking compared to stock.

    I have the Powerstop Z16 but have not yet installed it. I am contemplating onto upgrading into slotted rotor as well but I am wondering if it is justified or it's just overkill?

    Unless you find yourself slamming on the brakes and not being able to stop as fast as you'd like, its overkill. I've thought about upgrading to G4 equipment too, but I honestly don't ever slam the brakes that hard in normal driving to even engage the ABS, so larger brakes does absolutely nothing for me. In fact, larger rotors and drums will make acceleration slower because there is more mass to accelerate (just like getting heavier wheels).

    This upgrade, however, will be more beneficial to those who have switched to wider tires.

    My two cents on ceramic is avoid duralast gold... they grind at random times no clue why but the sound goes away quickly. Even with new rotors !!!!!!!!!
