Manual Transmission Oil Analysis @ 75,000 miles

Just got my manual transmission fluid analysis back from Blackstone Labs. I sent this in when I did my first fluid change at 75,000 miles. Yeah...I know I was supposed to change it at 60K!

    Here are the results...

No major issues to report in this sample from your Mirage's transmission.

Universal averages in the far right column show typical wear for the Mitsubishi 5-speed manual after ~14,300 miles on the fluid. You've gone quite a bit longer on this gear lube, so these slightly high metals are actually better than average on a per-mile basis. Some of the metal might also be from wear-in, since this is the first fluid change, and the silicon is probably from harmless sealers.

The slightly low viscosity is okay, since there are no contaminants or other issues. Nice!

Moderators... Can someone change this thread title to "Manual Transmission Oil Analysis @ 75,000 miles"

Everyone is going to open this thinking it's CVT fluid analysis...which we probably need more than a manual trans analysis.

    You got it.

And thanks for posting your results.

I'm sure mine has higher metal counts!

What conclusions do you reach from these results?

60,000 miles manual transmission oil changes are about right, or something else?

    Well...that's a good question.

Yeah...I'd have to say that unless you're really hard on your transmission for some reason, the factory fluid certainly seems to be pretty resilient...and 60,000 mile transmission fluid changes are more than adequate for most of us. I suppose it also says that the transmission is pretty well designed if the fluid isn't full of bearing and synchronizer by-products at this point.

With my fuel-mileage slanted driving style, my transmission has had a very easy life. I wonder what (if any) affect this had on the test results.

Knowing how easy a fluid change is in these cars, I wish I had changed the fluid out after the first few thousand miles just to get a clean baseline for long-term testing. Maybe I'll do that on my next new Mirage.

I have sort of questioned all this myself. I bought a gallon of Redline MTL, & I decided to change my transmission fluid @ 30,000 miles (did this about 2-weeks ago now). I don't always assume factory fluids are the best, & doing that first change early will never hurt anything. I sense Redline is a decent if not superior product. I don't sense any difference after changing the fluid, but I don't regret doing it @ 30,000 miles.

Now that the factory fluid is out & fresh Redline fluid is in, I may go with 60,000 miles changes after seeing your report. Like you said, changing the manual transmission fluid in a Mirage is super simple. It's easier than an engine oil change as long as you have the correct funnel/hose to do the job. I picked up the perfect one at AutoZone for $2.49, but a person could make one just as easily with the right piece of hose.

If I had it to do all over again I would do what you did. Change it out relatively early just to get all of the break-in stuff out...then let it ride for a longer period of time.

But it's so easy and relatively cheap, I say go for whatever you're comfortable with. I don't think anyone has had an internal manual transmission failure. So hopefully it's just as bullet-proof as the engine seems to be.

I put Redline MTL in my trans at 60k. It cured some of the notchiness and balkiness the transmission always seemed to have. I planned to do it again at 120k, but figured since the OEM fluid looked so good coming out it might not be necessary.

Your results have confirmed this for me.

I wonder if Canadians are able to use this service? What is involved with shipping used motor oil across national boundaries? Are there any Canadian oil analysis services?
