$189 Mirage lease deal: "Not Cheap Enough" - Car & Driver

    Another drive-by smear job:

The three-cylinder Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback is detestable headed toward awful after a stop for a 7-Eleven hot dog. But it’s even easier to despise when its lease offer is $189 per month plus $3388 at signing. That’s dang near $3400 of your money just to start driving a terrible car for three years. The very slightly less crummy Mirage G4 sedan can be had for $199 per month with $3398 up front. Have you considered Merrell hiking boots? Or taking the bus?

Clickbait factories must keep up production numbers in order to continue on, despite whatever toxic discharges are released. It somehow helps justify their continued existence.

I don't know why I bothered reading it, as it comes across as yet another 'reviewer' who likely hasn't even driven a Mirage and is simply adding to the rest of the echo-chamber crowd, like chickens in a hen house when one clucks the rest follow.

Look at the reviews of those who at least drive one - they tend to at least acknowledge it's good points.

Wow - I didn't notice it was Huffman who regurgitated this latest little smear.

He wrote one of the worst US reviews of the car. Stirred up a bit of a hornet's nest in the auto-journo community. His original review triggered Torchinsky's response:

This Brutal NYT Mirage Review Is What's Wrong With Cheap Car Reviews

Favorite picture & quote from Torchinsky's article.

I managed to have fun in that 3-pot little Mirage. I drove it hard and pushed its limits and the result was a pretty good time, considering. I drove it with my wife and son and never once did I feel like my life was in danger. It's so vastly better than the entry-level cars we had years ago, it's not even funny.

And safety-wise, I'd rather be in a 2014 Mirage heading into a wall than a 1977 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. So all of you reviewing cars under $15,000 and *****ing that you can see stitching or a seam or a screw head can all go take your pampered little new-media hands and rub some velvet on your cheek or whatever you do to calm yourself after you touch some cheap plastic.

I think that's definitely going on. With respect to the Mirage, it's become the go-to car to trash talk.

I take that back. It seems that the author John Pearley Huffman may have actually driven a Mirage:

    Around the Block

Car and Driver magazine measured the Mirage crawling to 60 m.p.h. in 10.9 seconds.
Although in this article he never claims to have ever taken one for a spin...

In fact, he plagiarizes himself in his current article as he refers to hiking boots and public transportation in both. How creative.

    He is rebutted here:

Jalopnik - Countersteer: This Brutal NYT Mirage Review Is What's Wrong With Cheap Car Reviews

But I'm certain all this has been covered here before...

Sorry for the on-going edits. Stream-of-thought responses - like any good knee-jerk reaction - take time to properly develop.

    I have a better idea...Find a new Mirage for $10K.

You can put $3K down, borrow 7,000...and buy it for about $200 over 3 years with today's new car interest rates.

Better yet don't borrow money and pay cash because you never did like handing over huge sums of money just to get around.

After all, it's only a car.

A Chicago area dealer is listing a brand new 2018 Mirage ES (manual) for $8479. Not sure of all the details. That price may include some rebates that some may not be eligible for, but it's still a great price. Several ES models can be found for under $10,000 recently. With the addition of the backup cameras for all the 2018 models, it's nice to still see great deals on the base model of the Mirage.

If you like driving a manual, that a great deal on a new car with an excellent warranty. If I could add one item to this offering, it would be cruise control. Beyond that, the car would seem loaded to me!

Most professional auto reviews fail to point out the great deals that be found on the Mirage. The Mirage shouldn't be compared to a $15,000-20,000 cars. When you factor in the available discounts, it's in a market of its own.
