So it's 12.000 km for North America and Canada. So basically we are saving in service cost in Europe but pays a lot more on fuel.

I have always changes the oil at 3000 miles in every vehicle I owned. Have never had any problems with engines using oil. My dad had a BMW x5 which said change it every 15000 miles. After some time at 7000 miles or so he had to add another quart. I will continue to change it every 3000 miles to reduce the chances of the engine burning oil. I also change it myself whenever I can(summertime) to make sure all the oil drains out properly. I do not like the quick lube places since they do it so fast there is probably 1/2 quart or so of the dirty oil left in there. Just my thoughts, everyone has their own opinions...
^ I had the same opinion, until I saw how (relatively) clean the oil was even at 5k. I'll keep on doing 5k oil changes. The civic does so every 7500 miles, and even at 7k miles, oil was no where like conventional oil @ 3000 miles. Engine oil R&D has come a long way, and it seems like they have been working with engine manufacturers as well.
Every mirage comes with fully syntetic oil btw, that's why the 12 000km.

There are so many opinions about this topic that it's impossible to decide. I've always kept things simple: go with the manufacturer schedule when the engine is new and increase the change frequency as it ages.

I always have been logical. Instead of increasing the amount as it ages, possibly going with a thicker blend might do better, as that's what we did with our '91 land cruiser with a straight6. Over 1.2M kilometers and still counting.
Of course, along with increasing the frequency it's necessary to rise to viscosity. Over the years you should get familiar enough with the engine to know what oil it will like.

There is always a ton of opinions and misinformation when it comes to oil and oil change intervals. As I always say on car forums, the ONLY thing you can do is read and be educated and make your own decision.
That said, please head over to www.bobistheoilguy.com if you have never been, to read more about oil and filter technology than you probably will ever care to know...

Going to BITOG might leave one more confused than at first There, one can find an unending stream of opinions on all issues ...
Synthetic vs conventional
Thick vs thin viscosities
Short vs long OCIs
High efficiency vs high flow filters
etc
