(Turbo 3A92) T.E.D. - Time Exposed to Danger... Improving safety while overtaking.

With the most recent rises in fuel cost, and a potential for another 25% increase over the summer, North America's love for 6000lb trucks and SUVs means there will be a lot of drivers who no longer can afford to get in front of significantly smaller dinky cars such as our beloved Mirage. This means that drivers of sub 100hp vehicles will be crossing that yellow dashed line more often.

This brings a new concern: Time Exposed to Danger. This is the amount of time you spend on the wrong side of the road when you're forced to overtake some of these obstacles. Now that my vehicle has crossed 100,000km, and is no longer under the main warranty, I have decided to revisit a past project that was put on hold: The Safe-T Turbo.

The turbo in question is one from a 2015+ VW 1.8 TSI engine. as you can see that outlet muffler is huge as well as a number of brackets and flanges that are very large. After some trimming, this thing should be able to fit behind the 3A92. I'm thinking of welding the exhaust side of the turbo directly to a factory early style exhaust manifold. The turbine side appears to be cast steel, and the Mirage exhaust manifold looks to be hydro formed steel.... so relatively easy to weld.

A Search of the interwebs shows that these motor produce 80% of peak torque as low as 1800rpm. So safe to say the boost threshold is around that rpm, and maybe lower. Some basic math shows that this turbo should start making boost in the 2500-2700rpm range on a 1.2L 3 cylinder. A little lag on an engine such as this isn't a bad thing. Boost at low rpm can cause detonation and generally is a lot harder on internals.

The compressor side will also see some machining and welding to help with fitment. Seeing as I no longer have a shop, this project will be done on friends driveways and some aluminum welding done at work.
