Is it more of a foghorn-like resonant noise than a 'squeak'? Almost like a hum? Yes, inexpensive, non-OEM shoes will cause this. Not sure why. My solution was to remove the drums and add some silicone RTV sealant to the backing plates of the shoes to dampen the vibrations causing the noise.

You think its the backing plates. Interesting... The noise has gotten much better overtime, now a days it mainly occurs after a turn then goes away after a mile or 2 of straight driving.

With my car it has always sort of gone away with cold, damp weather and then come back strong with warm, dry weather.

My rear brakes were near metal on metal on the front shoes a while ago. I installed a couple of slightly better shoes that came from the trash...Then the brakes started making noise when almost coming to a stop, horn-like. Like Cobrajet described. So I ordered up a set of drums, shoes and wheel bearings. I should have bought a hardware kit too, my springs were pretty crusty and one broke.
The brakes quit making noise days after I ordered all the parts so I was in no rush to install them. I installed cheapo drums and raybestos or wagner shoes. They don't make any noise.

Mine went away after a seasonal tire swap. I am more than aware that a tire swap does not open up or modify the drums, I am also not sure if the mechanic drove it with the ebrake set.
