Not many available, and they look more expensive than what I'd want to spend for the purpose.

What do you know about the Baofeng radios on Amazon? Here's an example: BaoFeng UV-5R

I use a Baofeng UV-82 everyday. I put it in the sunvisor when traveling and it goes with me to work. I don't use an external antenna in the mobile since I won't be transmitting on it. Some hams call these radios "Chinese Junk", but they work awesome. I have several of them.....

I have 6. For $20/each I don't care if I drop/spill/run over/whatever to them. They are decent, have been getting better and will one day not far have all the features of the comparable Japanese handies. My Yaesu handy receives everything from 0-1000mhz. Mind, it's a $250 handy talky.

The ft817 like I have is pretty specialized. it's a radio a guy takes into the backwoods to stay alive and in touch with the normal world. that is changing as well though, now you can get a handheld GPS with satellite subscription messaging. Text anyone from the summit of Everest. Yep, all the challeges are gone. Im actually considering getting one for my boat for my next trip to the Med in 2025.

What do you use to program the BaoFengs? Do you use the radio's keypad or a computer interface?

The Prolific chip cable is $8 or so on Alibaba. Using Chirp and files prepared by other users you can fill all 128 memories in a matter of seconds. These little radios are the best electronic value of ANYTHING in the world. Really. $20 for a radio to talk to the world? For free?

Not to say my $250 Yaesu handheld was a waste, it has digital modes, will work over the internet, it receives from 30khz-999mhz (everything) and has 1000 memories! And GPS. very impressive radio,

I will be parking my 2017 Mirage this winter. Since my old Geo Metro is rotting away it's gonna be my winter ride. Four new snow tires, new brakes, control arms, etc. I also installed my Anytone 6666 and matched it to a Wilson Little Wil antenna. Testing reveals 14 miles on AM mode and 23 miles on sideband.

What do you guys talk about on the radio? I don't think I'm outgoing/bored enough to randomly talk to away on a radio for fun. I have a hard enough time trying to put together a video that's barely watchable for 2 mins lol.

Nice wheels. The world needs more trim rings.

I think that Metro is kind of awesome. I had trim rings once, I can take'em or leave'em.

And, my conversation with people on a ham radio would be mostly, "What are you doing? That's nice."
