Are they just a gimmick? I'm concerned if you need real torque it will slip and round off the fastener.

I'd buy a crescent wrench instead. As already mentioned, it might have a use for some things but I except it to be as durable and precise as the wrenches that come with assemble-yourself furniture.

I wouldn't recommend using anything like that. The only situation you could depend on that type of wrench working is on a pre-engineered tabletop demonstration. It might work in some real world situations, but who has time to wait for the stars to align? Even when it works, the design pretty much requires wear to occur on the fastener and the tool.
