Liminal space is an area that's meant to be inhabited by many but only has you in it. It's also that moment of in-between from order to chaos. Example: You're sitting at home reading the paper, alone, drinking your coffee, when you get a text from your brother in law. "I've been trying to reach sis.....wake her up. Our parents are dead." That moment in between, from the order of you enjoying your coffee to the chaos of telling your wife her parents are gone. That other-worldly feeling of being "in between" from point a to point b, that eerie sense of unease, that's liminal space.

I don't know about you all but when I'm alone in an empty area that's meant to be filled with life, especially at night, it makes the hair on my arms stand straight up.
Here's a famous example. If you don't know what film this is from, shame on you.

Dirk - This is a true story. One time, in South Korea, me and another Hyundai-Kia employee were staying at this rather tall and skinny hotel in Seoul. He and I wanted to get on the roof. The elevator would only go so high. I think the building was just under 40 floors. Not quite a skyscraper, but pretty darn high.
If the hotel had 39 floors, the elevator would only allow access to floor 37. So we figured we would check out floors 38 and 39 then hit the roof. We figured floors 38 and 39 must have been like penthouse rooms or something. We found a door on floor 37 that got us into a stairwell that went up. Seems like we couldn't find a door to this stairwell on lower floors, nor did we want to climb that many stairs.
We got into the hallways on floors 38 and 39, all the rooms were unlocked too. It was exactly the same layout as the lower floors, rooms and all. But it was completely abandoned of people. It could be felt abandoned instantly. And it was scary as all hell. Quiet. The smell of wet carpet, like your post. We could hear our footsteps. We could hear other creaking. Air still blowing either in the floors where we were, or past those floors ventilating lower floors. We could never tell if there was another soul up there, or not. The way we could hear ourselves, even when we were quiet, we couldn't tell if it was really us, or another person up there. Or ghosts. It was truly spooky as could be. There's no telling why those floors weren't being used. But you could tell noone had used those floors for years. We checked out some rooms. Most furniture was there. Then we decided to quit looking in the rooms as it was too scary about what we might stumble upon. Even if it were just a regular Korean person, how could they be up in this area all alone? They'd have to be psycho to be alone up there.
Then we got on the roof. It was much less scary there. I joke you not about this. No exaggeration. There were strong rails up on the roof, around the edges, but in other areas too. For whatever reason (perhaps I had some alcohol in me), I wanted to see if I could rock the building. I had leverage. I was on the roof. Far away from where the building was mounted (on the ground). I'm a big guy. I played college football. I grabbed a rail and just started rocking at about a frequency I was guessing would be the "natural frequency." I must have hit it dead on. My friend (Chris) had a certain look on his face. I stopped quickly and sat down and realized the look on his face was panic. Because I felt the friggin building swaying. It wasn't a huge sway, it was maybe 1 or 2 inches from centered, in each direction. And it damped out and stopped. We felt it. And we both freaked out wondering what kind of structural integrity that building must (not) have, if just 1 human can make it move. I exaggerate not 1 little bit.
It was a cool hotel, but I'd hate to live there.

Very awesome tale, wish I had an experience like that. I do recall making a cable car sway and it was several thousand feet above the valley floor but I gather pinheads like I did it all the time. It would only sway when near empty. I guess when it was full the g.c. was too low or something.

It's something in the ancient reptilian part of our brain I think. Like fire, darkness, and some brightly colored creatures, being alone in a massive space puts us slightly off balance. It's like how in your dreams, you can't read anything, words or numbers. Eerie and off putting.
Very cool story 7miles. I can definitely see how that would creep anyone out. Especially if you were in an American city instead of Seoul lol. Yikes!
