I may be wrong, but I don't believe the compressor cycling to have ANYTHING to do with a computer or computer programming at all. I may be wrong on that, but unless I'm proven wrong...
I have the auto-crappy-climate-numbers-so-you-think-it-is-really-something controls. And my compressor cycles frequently. But I don't think it's because it is programmed by the computer to do that. I've given the compressor cycling issue the ole Toyota 5 why root cause analysis. And the root cause was determined to be, because the compressor is chitty, leaky, and lower on refrigerant than it should be.

Fixed rate compressors have to cycle to regulate temperature. Variable rate compressors can run constantly and do some wizardry internally to make sure they don't get the evaporator too cold. When my 19 with manual controls was new the system was evacuated, weight checked, and refilled and it still just wasn't very good. We verified the operation with two different cars right off the lot and determined they behaved identically.
My other Mirages with auto controls also cycle the compressor but I've had no complaints with the a/c cooling the inside of the car.
