    Service Engine Soon

I got a text late last night stating the light is on. However, today, the light was off.

Lucky for them, I'll be in the area later tonight. I'll have my OBD2 scan tool with me; hope the code is stored.

    I asked the usual questions:
    • when did you notice the light
    • what were you doing when the light turned on
    • where were you when the light turned on
    • how long since it was last gassed up
    • where did you get the gas

Anything else I should ask about?

I havent changed the plugs yet at 120k. I'm hoping either bad gas or just plugs needing replacement.

Could it be the ECU re-learning regular 87 octane gas as compared to the mid-grade (89?) that I usually fill her with?

I'll throw out a couple of random questions/ideas...

    • Was the engine running bad when the light was on?
    • I assume the light was on solid and not blinking? Blinking is normally a bad misfire that usually doesn't fix itself.
    • If you get an "Evaporative Emission" related code, maybe they didn't have the gas cap on tight?!?

I changed my plugs at 100K miles. Honestly, they didn't look too bad.

She wasnt able to meet yesterday so either tomorrow or Sunday will be the ECU code check.

Based on a few more Q/A, it happened a little after the 2nd gas-up. She noticed the light stay on after the car had stalled after reversing into a spot. This was about a 10min drive after gassing up.

Could be gas-cap related but why would the light have cleared itself without any intervention?

I didnt ask where she gassed up because the most obvious answer would be 'where cheap.'

This sounds like an evap leak through the fuel pump. Hopefully it's no big expensive deal.

Is a used fuel pump really a good deal since the original factory ones crack & leak?

Finally had the opportunity to plug into the OBD port. No stored faults/codes. UGH.

I drove it in the parking lot (was my bday celebration so I didn't have much time to spend) and it was felt fine & sounded fine. No lights whatsoever.

Must have been the ECU figuring out the new gas octane.
