Here's a knowledgeable speaker explaining & demonstrating how a Continuously Variable Transmission works, using a cutaway model.

Note: the model lacks the Mirage's auxiliary 2-speed gearbox which expands the ratio even further. This is just the basics of the belt/pulley operation.
