Mirage G4 sedan confirmed for Australia: available July 2014

I used to think that way but in reality how many times are you going to carry a fridge. I have a sedan Attrage and i think it's great, sorry guys and better looking than the hatchback. The boot/trunk on the Sedan is enormous.

About the looks, well, that's pretty subjective. I happen to prefer the nice short tail of the hatchback.

Looks are definitely subjective. I'd like to know:

1. weight difference
2. suspension setting difference (if any)
3. power difference
4. headroom/backseat difference
5. driving visuals difference (can you see outside as much in the sedan compared to the hatch)

1-3 are obviously driving related. Those would impact, one way or another, how the car would "feel" when driven.
4-5 are convenience related.

About argument about hatch vs trunk: i'm pretty sure the trunk space of the sedan is more... It would be, however, like already stated, be easier to put stuff in/out of the hatch.

MITSUBISHI Motors Australia has introduced a sedan version of its re-born Mirage micro car, priced from $14,490, plus on-road costs, making it one of the cheapest sedans on the local market.

Eschewing the Attrage nameplate that was mooted when the vehicle was revealed in May last year, Mitsubishi is offering the booted Mirage with one powertrain and two specifications – base ES and top-spec LS.

The ES kicks off the range, matching 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a five-speed manual gearbox from $14,490, plus on-road costs. This price rises by $2000 to $16,490 when optioned with the continuously variable transmission (CVT).

In ES manual guise, the Mirage Sedan commands a $1500 price premium over its hatchback twin, while the ES CVT is $2000 dearer than its more compact hatch equivalent.

The range-topping LS is only available with a CVT at $17,490, which is $1000 more than the price of the Mirage LS hatch.

At this end of the micro/light car segments, the Mirage Sedan has a few competitors, including the Nissan Micra-based Almera from $16,990, as well as slightly larger fare such as the Honda City from $15,990, Holden's Barina sedan from $15,490, the Hyundai Accent at $16,990.

Pricier options in this field also include the Toyota Yaris YRS sedan from $18,190 and Kia Rio Si sedan at $21,690.

Only the Malaysian-built Proton S16 GX sedan undercuts the Mirage, with a driveaway price of $13,990.

The new addition to the Mirage range is 4245mm long and 1670mm wide, which is 535mm longer and 5mm wider than the hatch on which it is based, while the wheelbase is stretched 100mm longer on the booted version.

This has made a difference in the cabin with the sedan offering 194mm more legroom in the rear (944mm) than the hatch, while front-seat passengers have an extra 157mm to stretch their legs with 1058m of legroom.

Naturally, the sedan has more generous cargo capacity, with 450 litres of boot space compared with 235 litres in the hatch.

While 450 litres is generous for such a small car, it trails the Nissan Almera which can carry 490 litres and the Honda City which claims a massive 536-litre cargo capacity, larger than many mid-size and large models.

Powering the tiny sedan is the same 57kW/100Nm 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine under the bonnet of the hatch, with official combined fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres, up 0.3L compared with the 50kg-lighter hatch's 4.6L/100km figure.

The CVT features a gear-shift control calibration for greater control during accelerating and less transmission slip. A neutral idle function helps to save fuel and also lowers vibration at idle for a quieter cabin.

Other measures that have improved cabin noise include extra sound insulation in the front fenders, the floor, A- and C-pillars and the dash panel, while a new engine mounting system has also cut engine noise and vibration.

The company said the dynamics of the sedan have been re-tuned for a more comfortable ride over different road surfaces and the springs and dampers have also been calibrated to suit the sedan body-style.

In base ES guise, standard features include air conditioning, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with controls on the steering wheel, USB input, power mirrors and windows, a “black suede touch knit” interior trim, chrome highlights and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The LS adds climate control air-conditioning, push-button start, dusk-sensing headlights, rain-sensing wipers, leather steering wheel, tinted windows and black embossed knit trim.

On the safety front, the Mirage features six airbags, including side curtain units, as well as hill-start assist, a hydraulic brake assist, , the Emergency Stop Signal which triggers the hazard warning lights under heavy braking and the RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body structure that absorbs and redistributes force away from the passenger cell in a crash.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia marketing director Tony Principe said the new sedan would appeal to light-car buyers looking for extra space.

“The new Mirage Sedan balances value, style and safety with low running costs, making it the ideal choice for customers looking to downsize into a smaller, more fuel-efficient car without compromising on features and space,” he said.

“The Mirage hatch has been embraced by Australians since it was launched last year, and the new Mirage sedan provides buyers with another well-equipped and attractive option at a price point that’s hard to beat.”

Mitsubishi is launching the Mirage sedan during a tough period for cars in the micro car market, with year-to-date sales down 33 per cent in the overall segment.

The company has sold 3916 Mirages in the first six months of 2014, which represents a 29.3 per cent drop on the 5535 sold in the same period last year.

The only car in the segment to experience year-to-date sales growth is the Fiat 500, which has achieved 1473 units – up by 142.3 per cent on 2013.

Earlier this week, Mitsubishi announced that it had signed a deal with Fiat Chrysler Group to sell the Mirage Sedan as a Chrysler-badged model in markets including China and Mexico.

Also hopefully Mitsu repeats the hatch roll-out pattern, which means the sedan comes to NZ shortly, then Canada and the U.S. too. (The company is showing the sedan in the U.S. in 2 weeks at its customer appreciation event.)

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has boosted its popular Mirage range with the addition of a stylish new sedan model.

The new model is the first sedan to wear the Mirage nameplate in its 18-year history.

Introduced in January 2013 in its current form, the well-equipped and sharply-priced Mirage hatch has dominated the micro car class in 2014 and enjoys 50 per cent segment share year to date**.

Mitsubishi Motors has expanded the Mirage range with a compact four-door sedan option featuring generous interior proportions and spacious 450-litre boot.

The sedan’s wheelbase has been extended by 100mm, enabling it to comfortably seat five adult passengers and accommodate their luggage.

Despite its spacious interior dimensions, the Mirage sedan upholds the Mirage’s reputation for frugal and efficient performance, with all sedan models gaining an official rating of 4.9 litres/100km combined.

Technical details

Mirage sedan’s responsive 1.2-litre 3-cylinder 57kW DOHC MIVEC petrol engine and low 0.29 drag co-efficient help it achieve official fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100km and 116 g/km of CO₂ across all 5-speed manual ES and the CVT-equipped ES and LS variants.

Two transmission options are available on the entry level Mirage Sedan ES – a five-speed manual or Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic – while the top-spec Mirage Sedan LS is fitted with a CVT automatic.

Fuel economy gains have been made by adopting a new super flat torque convertor and high transmission ratios, which also help acceleration performance.

Mirage sedan’s CVT transmission ratio mapping has been adjusted for increased
engine braking over a wide vehicle speed range and an updated torque convertor lock-up strategy optimises fuel efficiency and driveability.

Meanwhile, a new gear shift control calibration enables better acceleration control and a reduced sense of CVT transmission slip.

CVT-equipped Mirage sedans also benefit from neutral idle, a fuel-saving feature that also helps minimise idle vibration and promote a quieter cabin ambience.

Also contributing to quiet cabin acoustics are additional sound insulation in the front fenders, front and rear floor areas, A and C pillars, dash panel and front cowl top. Further improvements have been made with a new engine mounting system that minimises engine noise and vibration. It’s comprised of a hydraulic insulator and high rigidity, lightweight cast aluminium bracket, while the transmission mount uses a lightweight and rigid cast steel bracket, which also helps to reduce noise and vibration. The engine itself is also quieter thanks to newly developed loss reduction technology.

Mirage sedan vehicle dynamics have been completely re-tuned for a comfortable and predictable performance across a wide variety of road conditions. Springs and dampers have been calibrated in accordance with the sedan body characteristics, which are designed to accommodate extra weight in the rear. A re-tuned front stabiliser bar has been added to maintain body roll control.
Compared to the Mirage hatch, Mirage sedan sits on a longer wheelbase and has a slightly wider front and rear track. This ensures Mirage sedan has a good balance of nimble performance around town and road comfort on extended journeys.

Coupled with a tight 9.6 metre turning circle and electric power steering – which is tuned for light steering efforts around town – the sedan’s suspension and steering package make it a very easy vehicle to park and manoeuvre.

Despite the increase in overall dimensions, Mitsubishi Motors engineers managed to keep Mirage sedan’s kerb weight to 925 kilograms (ES 5-speed manual). Weight savings were made through a range of measures including the adoption of a revised HVAC system, which is 11 per cent lighter than previous units.

Mirage sedan front brake discs increase to 355mm compared to hatch, and rear brake drums go up to 203mm.

A new 15-inch alloy wheel design on both ES and LS models completes the package.

Safety

Mirage sedan’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body structure has been designed to absorb and redistribute crash forces away from the passenger cell. Extra reinforcements are provided by an efficient energy absorbing side member and high rigidity floor cross members positioned in the side sills, B pillars and rear floor side member.

This rigid body structure is further bolstered with a comprehensive array of safety and electronic driver aids, providing Mirage sedan with a complete safety package. Mirage sedan has 6 airbags – driver and passenger front, plus two side and curtain airbags.

Active safety features include Active Stability Control (ASC), ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Hill Start Assist (CVT models only) and hydraulic Brake Assist. It also gains Mitsubishi Motors’ Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) feature, which flashes the hazard warning lights under heavy braking to alert vehicles approaching from behind.

Warranty & Servicing

The Mirage sedan benefits from Mitsubishi’s five-year/100,000km new car warranty.

The Mirage hatch and sedan range has Mitsubishi’s four-year Capped Price Servicing, which is $290 RRP for the first, second, third and fourth services, which are scheduled every 15,000km or 12 months, whichever comes first.

The Mitsubishi Mirage sedan will be available from Mitsubishi dealers from 1 July, 2014.
