MPG 5-speed vs CVT doesn't seem right.

I have been looking at the 5-speed vs CVT transmission fuel logs, and it didn't seem right that CVTs would get almost 30mpg less than manual transmissions. I started looking at the fuel logs I thought were outliers, and came across the fuel log for mitsoulorette, which says they got 2,167.1 mpg (US) on 12-15-2023.

Other outliers include mitsumi, which states 3,108.4 mpg (US) (5-speed) near the bottom of the list, with no real date or fill up data, and emanuelrv with 4.4 mpg (US) (with CVT) also with no date or fill up data. Both of these were at the bottom, which leads me to believe they were either logs from very early on or there is some error in the code.

I would believe the manual transmission to still be higher MPG, because of locations of manual transmission drivers (not as popular in the USA) and they probably would attract more hypermilers, but I think this deserves some looking at.

I saw that also. The outliers skew the log, but the regular contributors seem to show better mileage for the 5 speed manual.

It is easy to make mistakes entering information in the forum Fuel Economy Log - at least that is what I assume you are referring to. So consider those outliers as data entry errors and set them aside. 3,108 miles per gallon out of one of these cars? Not bloody likely!

The best way to improve fuel economy for these cars is to keep the tires aired up and slow down.

I am the lucky one that does not care about MPG a lot, why? LPG is the answer - not sure if it's popular in US but in Europe - Italy, Netherlands.. Poland, a lot! I paid 1k USD to convert the engine into LPG and now it's paying off a lot.
Price per one liter of LPG is between 70-80 cents, consumption of LPG is usually around 10% higher than petrol (LPG is less caloric than petrol) - still, full tank of LPG (33 litres in my case) gives me 480-500km of driving. My last fill cost me 21 USD (!). If I take the minimum I drove on one tank (430km) it's around 5 dollars per 100km which I consider not bad at all. The average LPG price in the past 12 months was 72 cents vs $1.64 for 95 octane petrol. You do the math

It is easy to make mistakes entering information in the forum Fuel Economy Log - at least that is what I assume you are referring to. So consider those outliers as data entry errors and set them aside. 3,108 miles per gallon out of one of these cars? Not bloody likely!

Any way we can get these mistake entries removed? Not that it's the end of the world, it is just annoying when they screw up the overall statistics.

True, when I first got it I was getting like 40mpg, I checked my tires and they were 4psi low. now I'm getting around 44mpg.

I'm assuming it would run the same, a bit less mpg, a bit less power. Here in the U.S. I *think* (meaning I don't know for sure) but LPG is about the same price per gallon as E10 gas. Not a lot of attraction.

It used to be cost effective to burn propane but over here, the price is too close to gas. The only benefit would be that the oil stays ridiculously clean for a long time when burning propane. At least that's what I've noticed on my junk and lpg forklifts. Downside is the crankcase turns to chocolate milk if the engine is never brought up to operating temp.

Heck yeah. Try 45 psi if you dare. I used to run 50 psi. Depends on what your tires are rated for and your comfort level.
