    Cool story: Ontario Hydro (HEPCO)

I found this outdated propaganda on a federal website....

“Different jurisdictions use different sources for power generation. B.C., Manitoba, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Yukon typically generate over 80% of their electricity from hydroelectricity. Ontario, New Brunswick, and NWT rely on various combinations of nuclear, hydro, wind, biomass, coal, natural gas, and petroleum–although not all provinces or territories use all of them. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Nunavut generate most of their electricity from fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, or petroleum.”

I don't think there are even any more coal power plants in Alberta anymore, there might be two but I believe they were scheduled to be closed last year. And...Ironically enough, We couldn't produce enough electricity here this winter so Saskatchewan fired up one of their backup coal fired power plants to send power to us before rolling blackouts started when it was -40.

I was gonna say that it seems like areas that use power from hydro-electric call them hydro lines and the rest of us call them power lines. I got side tracked.

A lot of coal plants are being decommissioned.

AFAIK all the Ontario coal fired plants are either shut down or in reserve status. I worked at Hydro for a decade and get this,

I stood on the reactor vessel while it was active and producing power at Chalk River, Ontario. There was a viewport IIRC on the top of the vessel and I could look down and into it.

I admit for a long time afterwards I honestly worried I had somehow cooked myself. This was because I failed an inspection looking for radioactive contamination when exiting the reactor building. I had to scrub down multiple times and do my feet twice. Over the years I got to stand in some pretty interesting places like the full size CANDU reactor vessel.

I don't know who told you this, but I worked at & fueled the NRU reactor at Chalk River as an Operator from 2008 until it shut down. I still work there. It was not a power reactor, but a research reactor. There was never a "view point" to look into it when it was operating. If it was shut down & we were doing "in vessel" work we used cameras.

As far as scrubbing down & cleaning their feet, not a big deal, just some contamination if they were on Top Of The Reactor especially during a shutdown. For any one interested,

We made up to ~ 60+ % of the worlds Medical Isotopes when we were operating & world class Neutron Beam research. I'm glad I got out of the Garage & had a chance to work @ this facility because it's part of Canada's history & I got to see it all first hand Sorry for the rant...

Then we have met in the past if you were at Chalk River. Whoever took me on the tours, and I had 3 over the years leading to shutdown each time so whatever I was told to have a look at was by whoever toured me around, BTW, wasn't it shut down in 1990? How could you be fueling a shut down reactor?

I read it shut down in 2008 or so. What was shut down in 1990? Am I thinking of Douglas Point? Hard to recall, I was at all the nuclear sites and the coal fired when they existed over the years.

And yes, I knew it was a research reactor but most people have a rudimentary understanding of atom splitting and research reactor brings blank stares.

ETA: Ya, it was Rolphton, the NDP, Nuclear Power Demonstrator that I was dancing around on. It was shut down around '87. That place I toured 3 times in a year.

NRU shut down on March 31 2018. We fueled right up to the last day. Running @ 110MW until the end. NRX shut down in the 1990's. I wasn't there for that. Maybe that is the one your thinking of. Douglas Point is on the shores of Lake Huron near Kincardine.
