Watch the video clip. They enter your car & drive off it with it. The same signal allows you to start your car apparently.

Not being a car thief, I can't share all the details very well. It's a problem. I've seen clips where cars are stolen within minutes with ease. Stolen means they enter your locked car & drive off with it.

I would pay extra to not have auto climate controls and push button start on any vehicle I own. They are worthless features that I would rather not have.

I'm thankful that making a third key for my Mirage cost less than $20. That total price included purchasing the key, having a hardware store cut it, and my Mirage programming it without the use of any programming tools. Should I lose a key now, I can do the same again.

Mark - We're very similar. I'm liking the idea of a 3rd key. Does your key have the built in fob?

In the video, the vehicle being stolen has pushbutton start. That indicates to me that vehicles that use a hardware key are immune to this method, unless I'm missing something?

The attackers might be able to unlock the car by duplicating the functionality of a remote keyfob registered for the car under attack. But if the car requires a hardware key, they won't be able to start it and drive off - at least without defeating the ignition switch, which isn't demonstrated in the video.

Commonsense would indicate a relay system is used to steal cars with push button start. Only the signal is needed to unlock & start the car, and the many key fobs are sending out that signal to be intercepted.

Are they copying that signal to use later, too? That part I do not know? If so, they would be able to clone a new key fob for the car later, too.

There's no signal to intercept from a key start ignition. Even with a remote entry, it's just activated for a second to unlock the car.

There's lots of stuff posted on this. I just grabbed a short clip to share.

I asked because your quote mentioned 'keyless entry' twice. A lot of cars have keyless entry, not many have pushbutton start.

Just wanted to make sure I understood what you were talking about, that's all.

Push button start is probably more common than key ignitions in today's cars. It seemed clear to me they were talking about push button start.

"Keyless entry cars allow the driver to unlock and start the car with the key fob still in their pocket." - was part of the original quote.

Guys - this is a very informative thread. Mostly unrelated to me, but I'm finding it very interesting, and good info to keep in mind.

Before my dad passed away, when he would go out in public, he would get out of his truck and push the lock button on the door. He had a keyfob, with a key. But he was always concerned someone would copy his code from his keyfob so he wouldn't use it to lock while in public. It had merit, but he lived in a low crime area.

He also had a gun in his pocket ... all the time.

    Glad to hear it.

Folks visiting & browsing the forum come with varying levels of knowledge & experience.

Mark can surely understand this. For example, a teacher can give a lesson on any given subject to a class of 30 students, and that one single lesson is bound to be interpreted in 30 different ways. Heck, just recently Mark explained why he repeatedly shares his knowledge on tires for the Mirage and how much he paid for his Mirage, from the standpoint that not everyone here has read every other post he's made on those subjects.

Us regulars here can usually figure things out & follow along. But for newcomers it's sometimes necessary if not just helpful to clearly explain things. (Edit - not saying you're a newbie... )

Unfortunately, as far as I can tell from what was done/attempted to be done/told to me, the locksmith ordered the wrong keys for the April 2014 and newer Mirage which won’t work for ones manufactured March of 2014 and before like mine.
