    - The lip on the threads of Fram Tough Guard filter makes it a little harder to get threaded since the filter doesn't do a good job of self-centering (easy aiming) like the Mobil 1 does.
    .
    - The Fram Tough Guard is much taller and it makes it much easier to actually get a grip on the filter when attacking from the top of the radiator support and diving down-in.

I noticed you used the M1-108. That is compatable with the 3A92 but it is a smaller filter. The first page lists the correct part number that autozone/rockauto shows. The M1-110 should be comparable size to the Fram Tough Guard (TF7317). This is why the M1 looked smaller compared to the Fram.

They royal purple is almost as good as the Mobil 1. It claims 99% filtration at 25 micros, Mobil 1 claims 99.2% at 20 microns. The place where Mobil 1 really excels is price, at autozone it is 12.99 vs 14.99 for the RP. If you get the m1-110 Mobil through Amazon with a order over $35 it's free shipping and less than $10 a filter.

No big surprise on the Fram failure. Avoid at all costs.

Been thinking about using a Hastings filter for the Mirage. They are well rated along with Baldwin their sister company. It's a little easier for me to get Hastings over a Baldwin where I live. When running the filter number through the Baldwin catalog they list three variations of the same filter (standard, short, long). I was thinking that running the long filter would do a couple of things.

1: Make the filter easier to change since it would be 1/2 inch longer.
2: Increase the amount of oil capacity slightly
3: Reduce the probability of bypass operation during cold weather start up or extended oil changes due to increased surface area.

    Hastings Long Filter: http://catalog.hastingsfilter.com/Pa...rtnumber=LF486

    Baldwin Catalog: http://catalog.baldwinfilter.com/Par...rtnumber=B1402

RP is 11.16 at Amazon with free shipping on prime.

If you follow the link to EVO forum M1 is a crappy filter.

LOL, I had a M1-108 on my shelf in the garage from my 2002 Honda Insight, probably 4 years. I picked up a Bosch D 3323 from Wally world. They had no listing for the Mirage, but the seal and threads match perfectly and it is listed for other Mitsus. I still get my 1st change free, just passed 4k miles, probably later this month.

Size of the filter has nothing to do with flow as long as it has a check valve which means it's full at start up. Same volume in same volume out (incompressible liquid). Larger filter media capacity just means you COULD go longer intervals, OR replace the filter every other change. This would get me down to about $20 US per change, using Mobil 1 oil.

    regards
    mech

How would someone know how their chosen brand of oil filter is effecting the level of wear in their engine ?

That's a good question for sure. I think the relevant issue is to run a quality filter with a good anti-drainback check valve feature that uses quality materials (that excludes Fram with their cardboard).
