Usually getting it into reverse is totally problem-free with the engine running.

If at a rare occaision reverse doesn't want to go in, just put it in neutral and let the clutch go, then swiftly press the clutch again and simultaneously put it in reverse.

I just wanted to know if the sloppy shifting cable linkage, can be replaced by a stiffer cable or rod, and that it would improve shifting feel?

The cable linkage really isn't all that bad. The best upgrade you can make for the manual trans is draining the factory fill gear oil and replacing it with Redline MTL. This will make it much less notchy and balky.
