I probably should have started a new thread, but this article states the future of Mitsubishi in America. I think that will carry over to North America, too.

Some quotes that strike me -

"The compact and affordable Mirage supposedly ends production later this year, leaving the Outlander, Outlander Sport, and Eclipse Cross as the only available models. New metal will start arriving next year with the debut of a lifted Outlander variant."

"It also has plans to replace the Mirage with a new entry-level model—a compact plug-in hybrid crossover—by the end of 2025, making the possibility of a rugged minivan the most exciting offering in the pipeline."

Personally, I don't see the need to discontinue the Mirage. Just add a hybrid crossover to your small line up, or dump the Eclipse Cross that never took off. Why can't we have one small economy gas powered car in America?

Then again, Mirage sales have not skyrocketed since the competition disappeared. I have never thought the Mirage was marketed very well. It's currently overpriced. I am not saying it's overpriced by a lot, but enough to make me consider something used instead. This is coming from someone who likes his Mirage. A replacement could be a used Mirage, but I would never buy a new one today.

I have nothing against hybrids, except their added costs upfront. I just hate to see all the small cars disappear from the scene. I truly hope Honda or Toyota decide to bring a small car option back to America. We're not going full blown EVs today or tomorrow for that matter. In the meantime, I wish better options existed, (I might be the minority).

I just find it very odd that our choices seem to be trending towards gas guzzling SUVs/trucks or EVs. Why can't something in between all that thrive & exist? Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, & Kia are doing a better job of maintaining a car fleet at least. American companies like GM & Ford should be ashamed of themselves. This trend has made me hate them even more.

Just my take on things. A new minivan or hybrid crossover doesn't excite me, especially if it comes at the cost of eliminating the Mirage.

Mark - I agree with 100% of everything you said, brother. And I mean 100%.

The only reasoning I can think of to drop the Mirage, is if Mitsubishi needs the manufacturing space to build that new crap-ass crossover. But for the life of me, I can't understand why they can't see what a great space they are in with the Mirage.

Seriously, all they need is a catchy commercial. Like the catchy commercial Hyundai-Kia had with the big mouses driving around in their cars. Stupid yes. But catchy. It sold a lot of cars to idiots ... but that's the point.

Keep the Mirage, refine it, make a friggin commercial, then turn the rheostat higher on the assembly line speed. There are Mirages being driven around down here on the Watermelon 500 (not my nickname), by the most unlikely customers. But for all the right reasons. I had never even HEARD of the Mirage until one day in about 2017 I was doing a search for the lowest TCO cars. I can't remember but seems like the Mirage was the 3rd lowest, behind a Kia Crapper, and maybe the Nissan Versa. Although I actually think the Mirage was actually the lowest (long story). Based on that I started checking out what the Mirage was and saw Dog Decrapo's video ... his video SOLD me.

But yeah, we think a lot alike.

And Kia Soul sales topped out at 154,768 in 2016, which probably outsold the entire line up of Mitsubishi that year!

It wouldn't take much to make the Mirage a little bit better. I like the charm of the current model, but something around 100 HP is sort of a sweet spot for most consumers. They may have to add a cylinder to get that?

Offer an affordable base model (manual option would be nice) & a fully decked out model for those who embrace that.

I'd take fewer horsepower & increased fuel economy. A cute little 6-speed manual, matched with a 0.99999999999L parallel twin turbodiesel with 270° crank. I'd be willing to bet, that if Mitsubishi did the engine right (which I think they would), all else being the same, said engine would run very close to our current engine, sound like a dream, and get 60+ mpg. I drool to have that engine with a 6 speed manual.
