I wonder if you could isolate the heater core and just continually pump this stuff through the core over a long period of time. Sort of like what this guy is doing...

I was thinking the same thing except:

    1. The two cleaning products I posted that address silicate gel recommend heat to do their work, and
    2. I would fully expect that if the silicate gel is found in the heater, it will be found elsewhere.

Yeah...guess that rules out circulating the stuff through the heater core at room temperature!

That would sure save some headache!

I wonder - are there coolant flushing machines that heat the solution?

The ones here don't mention heat:
Best Buy Auto Equipment - Coolant Flush and Fill Machines
    Wynn's Coolant Fluid Exchange Machine

there's no problem .just put an inline block heater into the mix. heated solution abounds. matter of fact, they pump too. all in 1 solution then,

Interesting. Can you give an example of the equipment you would recommend?

    Overview

Introducing Prestone’s NEW Radiator Flush & Oil Degreaser. An innovative and easy to use cooling system cleaner for the most contaminated systems. Just one use helps prevent overheating, a major cause of engine failure. Perfect for blown head gaskets!.

Part 1 is an acid cleaner that dissolves corrosion and scale without damaging metals.

Part 2 is an oil encapsulation system that strips grease and oil from all surfaces and flushes it away.

    Features & Benefits:
    Performance:
    • Eliminate oil & fuel contamination.
    • Strip away corrosion by product from metal surfaces.
    • Remove aluminum corrosion, silicate gel, and rust.
    • Restores cabin heat.
    • Fast and easy to use.

    Safe for all:
    • Antifreeze/Coolants.
    • Metals.
    • Gaskets.
    • Hoses.
    • Plastics.

    Instructions
    1. Drain cooling system, add Flush & Oil Degreaser and refill with water. (Systems larger than 16 qts may require 2nd bottle.).
    2. Bring the engine up to operating temperature and ensure circulation through the entire cooling system for 45-60 minutes. Systems that are especially contaminated can run up to 3 hours.
    3. Thoroughly flush the cooling system with water.
    4. Drain the cooling system and install half the cooling system capacity with Prestone Antifreeze/Coolant, top off with water and thoroughly mix by driving.
    5. Verify the coolant concentration and level and topoff as necessary.

Do not reuse container. Keep container closed. Dispose of according to federal, state, or local regulations.
Perfect for blown head gaskets?!? What - before, or after?

After, as the failed head gasket would allow mix of oil/coolant in the water jackets...unless you were trying to be funny, then "LOL".

Hmmm...tempted to buy some of that just to see what it will dissolve. I wonder if it would dissolve something like grease or Vaseline?

I think they are suggesting you would use this after a blown head gasket because this is when the coolant would potentially become contaminated with engine oil.
