That's great news dspace9. Here's to many happy motoring miles ahead.

So I'm curious - what other work was done? Did they replace the spark plugs or anything else? Good thing you don't need a timing belt haha.

The following work was done: they replaced the starter, the flywheel and housings, some bushings and pins. Not quite sure if that's it, I will photograph the bill in this post maybe you can even explain some of it better than me.

Driving around this afternoon noticed downshifting especially the flywheel really sounds mint

Timing belt is something I'm still wondering about. Spark plugs I'm told are still good for a whileName: starter copy.jpg

There is no timing belt, so no worries there.

Looks like they changed your transmission lubricant. Do you think that explains improved shifting?

    Good news all around.

Good stuff MetroMPG, but what is the ring gear you speak of in this thread's title? I had starter and fly wheel issues, do people call fly wheels ring gears? Please explain I just gotta know more to keep my car mint on the road.

Ring gear = the teeth on the outer edge of the flywheel.

Thanks yes, new transmission lubricant could be why shifting does seem smoother, thanks I hadn't looked into that, and I don't know when the normal change or flush of transmission lubricant is, if at all.

The shifting is better with the new flywheel too I think, I think the flywheel was probably getting worn down with the faulty starter grinding on the gears all the time for 5 years.

The whole operation of my Mirage seems smoother today than the day I took the car in for the warranty work.

Too bad Mitsu flip flopped a few times but all is well now.

I'm curious to hear how you think a new flywheel would change how your transmission changes gears.

I don't see how a new flywheel could change shifting. When shifting, isn't the input shaft of the transmission entirely decoupled from the flywheel by operating the clutch? I thought that was a necessary step, one which allows the easy changing of gears.

I meant the whole system is peforming at top notch, that's all sorry. Are you CVT or Manual on your Mirage?

It's like getting new soles on your favorite shoes.

Manual. Though I am curious to drive a CVT just for comparison.
