If you look back at my first post in this thread, you'll see that the first time I ever struggled with windshield glare was after I started wearing eyeglasses all of the time and found night-time headlight glare terrible.
As for Rain-X, at least the exterior kind, it is meant to make water stream off windshields better. I don't think it is designed to help with glare.
I never had a problem using windex or cheap imitation windex glass cleaners, but mainly we use them in the interior. The outside glass gets washed when the car gets washed, when it rains, when the windshield squirters operate.
Some windshield issues people are talking about could be related to how worn/pitted/etched their windshields are, which could be caused by a lot of things besides any window cleaners or treatments.
