Half the problem in this situation that nobody has brought up is-- traffic coming along on the freeway there, they should be changing lanes for you when you're merging onto the highway. They should give you the courtesy to give you the room to join the freeway, and then get up to speed in the slower right lane.
Part of being an attentive driver is watching out for cars merging onto the highway.
Then again literally being seen in the first place driving a small car by other cars in ugly merging spots, is another problem.
