Nope. Wasn't the pilot bearing. The bearing inside the trans that supports the end of the input shaft just inside the case from the release bearing.
Also important to note. This was my fault. This car has been used and abused. With normal driving and maintenance this should never happen. I didn't do my first trans oil change until about 116K miles. Consider my car a torture test for the benefit of other mirage owners. LOL

That's some impressive damage! Good work

Pretty little thing. $250 with 21K miles. I'll probably take it easy on this one. Note how nicely centered the input shaft is.
Yup

Well, yes... but... how many of us have been driving without one for how many hundreds of thousands of miles without a problem?
The engineers decided it wasn't necessary. Less weight, less friction, one less part to keep in inventory, one less part to install.
This is the kind of thing that adds up to make our car what it is. It wasn't designed to be the most stout and endlessly reliable car under every imaginable circumstance (like an 80's vintage Mercedes). It was designed to be cheap, reliable under normal driving conditions, and ECONOMICAL in every way.
Simplify and add lightness.
Wow. All that damage and it still ran. I think that's impressive.

Once or twice a week it would make a loud chatter when accelerating from a stop. If i slipped the clutch when pulling out from a stop it wouldn't do it at all. Otherwise it ran fine. That's why i had myself convinced it wasn't a transmission problem. Honestly if it weren't for the oil leak causing the clutch to slip I'd still be driving it.
