"AS-IS special" I got at a North Toronto Toyota dealer with 145,000 km on the clock (90k miles).
Came with a clean Carproof report, service history from the Mitsu dealer next door (one owner, relatively well maintained).
It's so much nicer to drive than the 2000 Metro winter beater it replaces!
Other nicknames considered: Lifestyle Inflation, Metro DeVille, Silver Poupon, Mirage #1 of N
New, this car cost $15,898 + $1450 mandatory freight charge = $17,348. With taxes: $19,603. Doesn't include unknown dealer charges. Basically, $20k out the door.
Details
Whoopsie-daisy on the front left corner contributed to its low, low price. Several other misc scuffs & chips in the paint around the car.
So, so dirty. The Toyota dealer didn't even bother vacuuming it.
Busted antenna, so the radio reception isn't very good right now.
Looks like it still has the original battery.
Cadillac soft! So soft.
Came with Dunlop WinterMaxx snow tires 165/65r14 size and lots of tread. Looks like the wheels have never been cleaned - the finish is stained from all the brake dust!
It's not perfect. There are some wavy bits where I stupidly used my little hammer. And the paint cracked/flaked off where a couple of creases were too sharp, so I just dabbed on some silver paint to cover the metal. Also, the hood-to-fender gap is larger on this side than the passenger side.
But it's a million percent better. A pro bodyman would throw up a little in his mouth at the caliber of my repair work, but the average person probably won't notice. so I'm calling it done.
I'll deal with the scrapes & splits on the bumper cover in the spring.
Also: did an oil change yesterday with 0w20 synth, and the odometer just rolled past 145,000 km = 90k miles.
I'm not 100% sure when it was last changed -- the last oil/filter entry on the Mitsu service history printout shows 104,258 km, so ~40,000 km (25k miles) ago. The old oil was very dark, and there's no quick lube shop stickers on the car.
And I'm not sure how to read the wrench info in the cluster just yet.
The good news is the level was right at the top mark on the dipstick.
I discovered contact information for the previous owner today, via my mad CSI sleuthing skillz!
Why? Because I wanted to ask if she still has an extra key for the car (Toyota guy said it was traded in with one only).
Breadcrumbs...
1) Helpfully assisted by said owner whose full name was on a card inside the warranty/service booklet in the glovebox;
2) Also helped by the Toyota dealer which didn't even bother to vacuum out the car, so there was a business card in the hatchback for a charity that didn't have her name on it, but which did have an e-mail address.
3) Put A and B together, and Google shows me that her name is one of three registered directors of said charity.
4) Bingo!?
I'll hopefully know soon enough. I sent a message this afternoon.
If you don't have any luck you could pick up something like this then go through a pick a part and grinch the actual fob part from inside a key then see if any local locksmiths or shop with a scanner like mine can program it for you? I was prepared for that but thankfully the guy I bought from had both keys.
