I wouldn't take a Hyundai for free. My experience with two fairly low mileage cars left me stranded multiple times with a no-start but no-code situation. I gather this issue plagued Hyundai over several models spanning several years.

That's quite an assumption on your part, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I would put Hyundai/KIA just behind Toyota/Honda myself. I'm way more impressed by Hyundai/KIA than the Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi Alliance. I like my Mirage, but it's the only new Mitsubishi that I would still consider buying today. I only buy manuals, however.
If I was shopping for a new vehicle (excluding pickup trucks) today, my time would be spent looking at Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, KIA, Mazda, & that is about it! I wouldn't hesitate to replace my Mirage with another used Mirage, however.
