2014 - VERY loud, electronic screeching when pushing the start button, intermittent.

Hi all! Looks like a great group of people!! So glad to be here. Also glad you all love your Mirages.

So I just bought a 2014 Mirage with 83K miles. The garage I bought it from replaced the starter before I bought it, so they claim. A few times a week, when pushing the ignition button, the car makes a very loud, electronic sounding screeching noise. So far, it starts after a few tries, but very unnerving, as I just, just bought the car a few weeks ago. Because I can't recreate the noise, I can't get the garage to take this very seriously. (ps, I'm a woman). There's no pattern. Key is always put in the cup holder. Temp has been mild, so it's not a cold issue. I work nights and this god awful noise in my neighborhood in the middle of the night isn't cool and I want to take care of it before it does leave me stranded somewhere. Any thoughts? Any suggestions welcome!

Stupid question...can you tell where it's coming from? Hopefully it's not the teeth getting chewed off the flywheel. That wouldn't make an electrical noise but would be a loud screach as the starter engages.

No, definitely not that noise. That's metallic. This one is electronic sounding and comes from right behind the push button to start the car. Appreciate the prompt reply

I recall a few people having issues with push button start Mirages when they had a id rf cards or something like that in the cupholder. Have you tried putting the key in the little slot in the front of the console each time to see if still does it?
We only have one push button start Mirage in the fleet I look after and it's a 2023. The only weird noise I've heard from it happens when I leave the car running and take the key with me. But that sounds like an annoying beep coming from somewhere under the car. I've never actually tried to find where it comes from. That doesn't sound like your issue though.

I know my 2014 made weird screeching noises on cold start ups sometimes. I even brought it in to a trusted shop. They said it's the tiny unrefined 3 cylinder engine and not to worry about it.

Welcome to the forum!

When you start your car I would try recording it on your cell phone every time. At some point, you may record what is happening. You will hopefully have something a little better to share with your garage & us, too!

What you're describing would bother me, too! My serpentine belt makes a squeal at start up sometime, but it doesn't hinder the start up process like you are describing.

I'm feeling somewhat cornfused. You say it is behind the pooooosh button. But earlier you mentioned that it is a loud noise at night, possibly disturbing neighbors. I'm just looking for clarity. Do you think the sound comes from the interior? Like within the dash area? And as such most of the loud sound is captured inside the cabin?

Or do you think the sound's origin is from under the hood, in the engine bay? Distinguishing this will help.

That sounds just like my starter issue before I had it replaced.

I would turn my key, and I'd just hear this grinding, loud, screeching sound, and I couldn't get my engine to turn over and start. Since i got a new starter, never had this issue again.

Happened intermittently. Someone on the Forum found a recall on the 2014 starters, and I printed it out, and brought it to the dealer, and the dealer fixed everything.

It's "curious" the seller would emphasize that they have replaced the starter...
