I wonder, would it be easier to remove the engine to do a clutch job that pulling the transmission? If I can remove the engine by itself, I wouldn't have to monkey with taking those axles out.

Ok, so it will have a new, non-slipping clutch. Not sure that will fix the issue of not wanting to go into first gear. I would think if the clutch were the cause, it would have issue going into all gears.
