Has anyone installed a different shift knob, if so, how did you remove the factory shift knob?

Just rotate it counterclockwise
Agreed. I just freaked out my passenger when I casually said: oh look, the shift knob broke.
Thanks! I've seen a few video's & on some other car's you have to place the shifter in neutral. Is it the same for the Mirage? I am wanting to replace the shifter with the shift knob Mitsubishi offers. Part # MZ525507EX. Let me know what y'all think.
No, that's not the case as I was removing the knob as I was driving...
Edit: just googled that number and found one on fleabay for 121$ aintnobodygottimefodat.jpg
What about the chrome looking accent at the bottom of the leather knob, does that whole thing turn or do you have to push it downwards? Is it all one peice in other words?
No just turn the knob counterclockwise
The only thing one can remove is the knob. Everything else stays in place.
I'm assuming that if you buy that lancer/outlander knob, it will also be just that, the knob.
EDIT:
That knob does look good fwiw.
I recently installed a homemade shift knob. I bought the skull at a trucks stop years back. I first drilled and tapped the bottom of the skull and installed it in my 1991 Chevy S10. After I got the mirage I soon got the urge to try it in on for size. The threads were not to strong and it eventually stripped out. I plan on drilling it out larger and installing a metal thread insert.
