What were you driving before, in case I missed that?
I had a 2015 Ford Focus SE, It could do pretty decent for its size,40-45mpg if i really tried, But it was out of warranty with 100k on the clutches in the DCT and i didnt want to fork out the $3,200 for the eventual clutch replacement that it would probably need more then once lol. Sooo i got a Mirage and extended the warranty so i don't need to worry about it for quite a while. I drive a lot (2500ish miles a month) I bought the 2022 mirage june 1st with 40 miles on it and it now has about 3200 miles on it already lol.

Oh yeahh haha, watched youtube videos and everything, Every reviewer dogged the car for being underpowered, Cheap and slow. Tbh...It just made me want one even more Mainly that 10 year 100,000mile warranty which i extended past just the powertrain (bumper to bumper) was just...Unbeatable.

I haven't seen where the lower RPMs with the CVT have translated to superior mpg numbers to the manuals, but you are apparently seeing that.

I sometimes wonder how much more friction there is in a CVT versus gears? There's a reason why a CVT is more inclined to overheat. I am not as convinced CVTs are all that spectacular in improving mpg. A properly geared vehicle driven appropriately would still be hard to beat in my mind.

A taller 5th gear would improve the manual, but I am more than satisfied with the performance as is. I love the ease of maintenance with a manual (drain oil, refill to the fill hole, & no filters to be concerned about), but burning out a clutch would suck.

I've owned three vehicles with less horsepower than the Mirage in the past. Compared to today's vehicles, the Mirage is unique.

I never thought about the additional friction of the CVT. Come to think of it, I've never driven one, just traditional automatics. It would be interesting to have both the CVT and 5 speed version to compare.

Either way, 60mpg is amazing. I'd love to take mine on a road trip to see what kind of mileage I could get. I almost got 400 miles on the last tank but chickened out toward the end because I didn't have a gallon of gas handy.

I hear what you're saying. And I do think you have a good point. 80 mph = 4,057 rpm

However, 80 mph is probably the fastest I would ever set my cruise control. And the max torque of these engines is in the 4,000 to 4,100 rpm range. So, even though that is a lot of rpm, this engine just purrrrrs along at that rpm. It's not the quietest engine ever, but the sound of the engine is so pleasant at that rpm, it doesn't feel pushed. On the positive side, I haven't met a hill on the interstate yet that would cause the car to lose speed with the cruise set at 80 mph. And to pull even the steepest hills (in my area), the engine doesn't scream, it just runs the same pleasant rpm and just grunts it out.

I generally drive slow these days, as I like achieving high mpg while the lifted F250s and QX80s go blowing on by me, blowing through their gas. However, a couple years ago I took 2 of my 3 sons to Knoxville and back in the Mirage. I didn't want them to get uncomfortable or be miserable so I set the cruise right around 80 mph in order to knock that trip out as quickly as I felt comfortable doing so. My sons aren't tiny and neither am I. 3 of us, their luggage it was nearly fully loaded (probably was fully loaded based on GVW). The car never flinched at any hills. Max torque at 80 mph works nicely for hills. And the mpg was about 38 for that round trip. My 2004 Corolla 5 speed was a heckuva car. But doing the same exact trip, it would have been about 31 mpg.

Prior to purchasing a Mirage, that was one of the questions I had for the collective here. I was concerned the car may tend to lose speed pulling hills on the interstate. The collective assured me it would not. And they were very correct. It just purrs a little louder pulling hills. I would rather the engine purr louder versus scream at near max rpm. I don't know if the CVT hits max rpm pulling hills on the interstate, but I'd be willing to be it pulls more than 4,000 rpm on hills on the interstate. I'd rather have the steady rpm.

You know the Mirage is a good solid car, when your 19 year old son uses the Mirage for the summer (versus his 290 hp Infiniti G35, 6 speed) and comes and tells you the Mirage is growing on him. But, we all know this already!

You're not kidding. The vibration seems to disappear at 4k and it begins to feel like an inline 6. Soooo smooth and it sounds good too!

You can look up the WLTP numbers for the Mirage with manual vs CVT and, theoretically, the manual gearbox can achieve 3-5% better fuel economy.

Note the "theoretically" here. I don't doubt that there will be people who emerge from the bushes and claim that they are stick shift gods and can do way better than those commie tests and also make women orgasm just by brushing their arm because their hands/fingers are so special and blessed.

The end result is that both are practically the same in terms of fuel economy. The manual will likely be far more reliable long term, though. But hey, that's why we have 10 year warranties
