Here are a few things to do before long trips:

Check the oil level or change the oil. This is the life blood of your engine, don't neglect it! If you have an idea of how many miles you'll put on your engine for the long trip, this will help you determine if it would be a good idea to change the oil before hand.

Make sure tires are properly inflated. Especially on long trips where your vehicle is more heavily loaded and you're traveling at higher speeds, proper tire inflation is more critical than normal. Low tire pressure not only gets you worse gas mileage, it also makes the tires more susceptible to overheating (which ages them much faster) and ultimately blowing out.

Check your wiper fluid. You don't want to be caught in weather where you need it and you've just run dry.

If you're like me, make sure you put your spare tire and jack back in the car :P

I would also consider a set of battery jumper cables and a tow strap. I carry them both in the spare tire well.

Sound advice. It's no fun having to deal with a flat tire especially when your spare tire is also flat.

Basically, follow the maintenance intervals spelled out in the manual. Consider doing an early oil change if it falls within the miles you expect to travel.

    Before leaving:
    1. Check all your fluids - motor oil, brake fluid, coolant level, transmission.
    2. Check and maintain air pressure on all tires. This has an immediate and cheap impact on fuel economy.

During your trip: It is a good habit to check your engine oil while refueling.
Also, remember to enjoy the journey and don't worry too much about the car.

    Bon voyage.
