    Sparkplug Specifications For UK Mitsubishi Mirage/Space Star 1.0L 2013

    Hello,

    I have a Mitsubishi Mirage/Space Star 1.0L, 2013, engine model 3A90.

    The manual lists the sparkplug as a NGK DILFR6A11
    however this appears to be difficult to locate and unlisted at the UK/USA NGK websites.

    NGK USA does list the 5468 SILFR6A11 which is available, though expensive ("longest life available").

    Other posts indicate the NGK 93298 as an alternative.
    This is listed at the NGK USA website as a LZFR5BI-11 for a 2014 or 2015 M. Mirage, L3 1.2L
    (there is no 2013 Mirage/Space Star entry, nor a 1.0L reference).

    The NGK UK website appears to have no current (2012-) Mirage/Space Star sparkplug listing.

    My attempted analysis of these part numbers using a NGK key and US website information is,

    NGK DILFR6A-11
    Laser Iridium Sparkplug,
    ...14mm OD thread size ?

    D = ?
    I = ?
    L = thread reach 26.5mm ?
    F = metal shell size, ø 14,
    .......19mm (3/4”) Reach (contradicts L?),
    .......16mm (5/8”) Hex.
    R = resistor type
    6 = heat rating (2=hot, 11=cold)
    A = special design
    11 = 1.1mm gap

    NGK 5468 SILFR6A-11
    ...0.6mm Iridium center electrode, fine wire
    ...Platinum, taper cut, on the ground electrode,
    ...5K ohms resistance
    ...14mm OD thread size
    ...longevity 80-100k (miles?)

    S = ?
    I = ?
    L = thread reach 26.5mm ?
    F = metal shell size, ø 14,
    .......19mm (3/4”) Reach (contradicts L?),
    .......16mm (5/8”) Hex.
    R = resistor type
    6 = heat rating (2=hot, 11=cold)
    A = special design
    11 = 1.1mm gap

    NGK 93298 LZFR5BI-11
    Laser Iridium Sparkplug,
    ...laser welded 0.6mm (0.8mm listed elsewhere) Iridium center electrode, fine wire
    ...laser welded Platinum on the ground electrode,
    ...5K ohms resistance
    ...longevity 80-100k (miles?)
    ...features : extended shell

    L = thread Reach 26.5mm ?
    Z = extended gap ?
    F = metal shell size, ø 14,
    .......19mm (3/4”) Reach (contradicts L?),
    .......16mm (5/8”) Hex.
    R = resistor type
    5 = heat rating (2=hot, 11=cold)
    B = special design
    I = ?
    11 = 1.1mm gap

    Photos show all three, DILFR6A-11, SILFR6A-11, and LZFR5BI-11 to have
    a similar tapered central electrode.

    My questions are,

    1. Is the NGK 93298 LZFR5BI-11 suitable for a M. Mirage/Space Star 2013 1.0L 3A90 engine ?

    2. Is there any difference in the spark plug requirements between a 1.0L and a 1.2L
    .....M. Mirage Space/Star, or across years 2012 onwards ?

    3. Is there any other alternative for a NGK DILFR6A11 in Europe ?

    Thank you.

    Have you tried to ask a dealer if there is a difference between the 1.0 and the 1.2 Liter engine?

    This would be a good question to ask when bringing the car in for service. I do not wish otherwise to discuss servicing the car with a dealer.

    Since iridium spark plugs last over 100k miles (160k km), this really isn't something to worry about at all. If the worst come, you go to the dealer and pay a little more, but you got your part.

    I am interested in whether a direct retail source is available as indicated in at least one other thread US response, however I am learning from this investigation that in the UK there appears to be no official second source. Assuming reasonable prices I would agree with your advice.

    I received an answer from NGK UK indicating that the DILFR6A-11 is currently only manufactured for Mitsubishi and can currently only otherwise be obtained via a Mitsubishi dealer.

    I downloaded a 2015 US Mirage manual (at least in English, RH drive and 1.2L 3A92 model only), which specifies the LZFR5BI-11 sparkplug which is available from direct retailers.

    Manual based summary (2013 for UK),

    UK 1.0L...3A90....NGK DILFR6A-11
    UK 1.2L...3A92....NGK DILFR6A-11

    US 1.2L...3A92....NGK LZFR5BI-11

    Since the same spark plug is recommended for both 3A90 and 3A92 engines in the UK, and the NGK LZFR5BI-11 for the 3A92 in the US, it might seem as though the NGK LZFR5BI-11 could be used if desired in the UK for the 1.0L 3A90 engine.

    However, the NGK UK response also indicated that the LZFR5BI-11 (and the SILFR6A-11) could not be used as an alternative to the DILFR6A-11 in a UK Mirage/Space Star.

    Bore, stroke, capacity, acceleration and top speed are the same in the specs. for UK/US models given at this forum (except the UK Automatic model which has different acc. & top speed).

    The US manual lists the 1.2L 3A92 engine as having a 10.5:1 compression ratio. This parameter is not stated in the UK manual, however the information given in the UK specification section of this forum states a compression ratio of 11:1 for the 2013 UK 1.2L engine, presumably based upon the 2013 UK manual listed 3A92 model also. The same engine model apparently can have two different compression ratios in two different countries.

    For whatever the reason it appears that there is sufficient difference between the UK and US engines to warrant two different spark plugs from the same manufacturer, and they recommend not using the US manual specified spark plug in a UK engine.

    Is there a reason why you want to change your spark plugs?

    Not at this time. However, I would like to know what the options are.

    I understand. I'm glad you looked into this. I find it funny how the same engine can have subtle differences in different markets, and this illustrates this point nicely.
