I use the AUTO feature frequently on my short trips but turn it off by slowing down the fan on longer trips.
So, there is no valve on the coolant within the heater box from what I can see.
Maybe there is an actuated valve on one of the heater hoses on the engine? I wish I could go out and take a look right now but I'm at work.

There is no heater control valve. I checked when I did my block heater install. I've also check the service manual and found no mention of one.

So coolant is always flowing through the heater core while the engine is running at operating temp. How could it clog?

I could be wrong but if the heater core were to get plugged, it would happen at the far end/rh side of the core. Everything flows the path of least resistance. In the heater core pic that 01-7700 posted, it looks like if any junk was to flow into the core, it would likely flow to the end of the core first before flowing through the narrow tubes. I've seen a lot of plugged cores(not in a mirage) and I'm willing to put my money on that. They are cheap enough to gamble to try. But not something you wanna do in the cold. In the meantime you could get one of those little 12volt heaters that sit on the dash or put cardboard in front of the rad?
And there is no shut off valve stopping coolant flow to the heater core.

I've got a bore scope on the way and plans to look at the actuation of blend doors when I get it. The shop manual shows how far the doors should open and close from outside the heater box on both sides.
