Mobil 1 (M108) next to a Fram Tough Guard (TF7317):
    .

    .

    .

    .

    .
    - The lip on the threads of Fram Tough Guard filter makes it a little harder to get threaded since the filter doesn't do a good job of self-centering (easy aiming) like the Mobil 1 does.
    .
    - The Fram Tough Guard is much taller and it makes it much easier to actually get a grip on the filter when attacking from the top of the radiator support and diving down-in.

Looks like the Fram should flow a lot better with all those holes??? Would I be correct or wrong as to big of an opening would slow down the flow. Like not pinching a water hose????

Also does that Fram TG have the Anti Drain back feature?

The orange rubber you see under the holes is the anti-drainback flap.

It does look like the diameter of the fram is a bit larger though?

    Hengst: H97W05

    Knecht / Mahle: OC196

    Purflux: LS910

All of these have anti-drain feature, plus bypass feature as well.

A size 65mm x 14 cap fits all of these listed. The cap is the preferred means of removal in our cars.

I don't have any personal preference here, they are all undoubtedly excellent, well-reputed OEM quality.

    Update:
Today I changed the original oil filter. The original was marked Mitsubishi part No. 1230A105. It also said on the same filter "DENSO BT115010-7360" and "made in Thailand" which makes it clear who makes it and what part number Denso lists it as.
The original filter has no anti-drain feature, but does have a bypass-valve.

I replaced it with a MANN W610/3. This is the same type used on most European-made Mitsubishi Colt, many SMART, many FIAT 500, Punto, and very many other makes and models. It is certainly one of the most common filters currently manufactured.
According to the quoted table above, I could have chosen any one from that list, but the local store just happened to stock the MANN version of the same filter.

The new filter with the anti-drain and bypass function is about 2.5cm (one inch) longer, but has the same diameter as the original one, and the exact same diameter rubber seal. It threads on perfectly during replacement.

CAUTION: The missing anti-drain feature on the original filter will make the filter drain itself within seconds while being taken off! So when you do replace the filter, put a pan under the car to avoid a mess.

Not sure if this can be added to original post but I've been researching filters, I found a few people claiming baldwin are very good, but then found this EVO thread about how AMSoil filters are the best.

(careful there's about 40 high resolution pictures)

Thanks alex16! When I looked up Amsoil months ago, they didn't have an in-house filter spec'd for the Mirage, but it looks like they do now. I'll add it to the OP!

Doing more research as always.... looks like the M1-110 is the filter to get!

    from yota4me on bobistheoilguy.com
"The book "How to select a motor oil and filter for your car or truck" (very good/informative) from Noria Corporation (bookstore at www.noria.com), cites a GM study that showed that engine life can be increased 2.7 times by using an oil filter with a SAE J1858 efficiency rating of 98.7% for particles of 10 micron size as opposed to/compared to using an economy grade filter with an efficiency rating of 98.7% @ 40 microns (150,000 miles for 40 micron filtration vs. 405,000 miles for 10 micron filtration). Efficiency of the air filter is also very important.I've looked/researched and can only find one oil filter that meets recommendation noted above for 405k miles engine life. The Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter exceeds above recommendations with a SAE J1858 multi-pass efficiency rating of 99.2% @ 10 microns ( http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...l_Filters.aspx ) and (PAGE 2) ( http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb...ic;f=6;t=003298 ). With less efficiency, the Puralator Pureone is 93.5% @ 10 microns"

If you get a oil change package at advance auto parts or autozone you can sometimes get the M1-110 free, or if you buy 4 or more and use a discount code at AAP (15% currently) you can get them at 11.70 (with 6% PA sales tax)

The fram Ultra is also rated very high, it is 97 to 99% efficiency rating at 20 microns, not too bad and you get a large filter with a easy to grip end. This is also a good choice if found for cheap. Fram has a bad reputation for internal designs being poor and paper end caps but the Ultra's are pretty good.

Added to the list... Royal Purple.

    Part Number: 10-2867

"100% synthetic micro-glass media for superior particle removal with 99% filtration efficiency at 25 microns"

    http://www.autozone.com/external-eng...hc/979757_0_0/

It's 25 Micros 99% is almost as good as advertised Mobil 1 99%@20 microns. It's a bit more expensive at autozone for the Purple ($14.99 vs 12.99 M1)
