I wouldn't bother. The filter itself is rarely the restriction in the intake. Read this article for more info.

I would go further to say it's detrimental to your engine. Most "performance" filters free up airflow by being less efficient. That means more contaminants go into ur engine..

since the topic is air, I was wondering if slightly restricting the amount of air that the maf reads would cause less fuel to be injected? maybe eeking out a couple more mpgs
Nope, the O2 sensor keeps air fuel ratios in check when an engine is in closed loop mode (which is by far most of the time).

yes. Closed loop is most of the time.
There is only very rare cases the engine will be in open loop.
1. When fuel cutoff happens (while cruising)
2. When car is just started (few seconds)
