I did a very quick warm air intake (WAI) on Tuesday night. I had a piece of 3" aluminum flexible dryer ducting laying around, but it was quite a bit shorter than I had hoped. I wasn't able to route it around to the exhaust side of the engine. So, instead I went to the radiator. And, it didn't even make it too far down either. The lower part of the radiator warms up first as that is the way the coolant flows into it. However, the whole thing took me about 10 minutes to make and install.
How does it function? Not all that well. It takes half the trip to work to even start getting warm. The highest temperature I saw was ~25F above ambient with 20F being much more common. If I use heat with any real aggressiveness, I'm sure it probably wouldn't do much of anything since you have to wait until the thermostat opens up to get any WAI heat. So, its not a great design and will have to be improved upon!
Here is a picture I took in the dark.

I updated my WAI the other day. The previous version took very long to warm up. In order to keep it warm, I had to watch how much cabin heat I used. No thanks, haha. So, I got a new 3" diameter aluminum dryer duct and went to work. It only took a few minutes to install, but it does work a lot better than the first version. It heats up so much faster, and it also gets warmer.
I've only had it installed for a day or so. I'm still trying to figure out just how warm its getting things. Ambient temp this morning was 25F. However, when I started the car my scangauge showed 40F for intake temp. The max temp I saw on the trip to work was 65F and it mostly hovered just below that. I'll double check those numbers on the way home since the car will have a chance to cold soak without the block heater (which I run in the morning).

Swarthy got a new upper grill block this weekend. It is all 3d printed (finally took Eggman's advise about this), and IMO looks really nice. It installs in literally 10 seconds with 3 clips, one for each vertical support on the grill.
Here are some pictures:
Parts on the 3d printer, just finished printing.
This is the initial print. It didn't follow the grill opening perfectly, but still fit great.
For the next version, I switched colors to print for funsies. This one follows the grill opening much better, and sealed around the ends better as well.
Here is the latest print. Its the same as the pink one, but in silver. I just installed it before going to work this morning. Its really overcast today, so you can't see it, but there is some shine to it.

It needs teeth.
Funny you mention this, I've been rethinking the winter grill block.

A nice side benefit of this mod is my WAI is now even warmer. I had previously seen a max intake air temperature of 75F from it, and an average in the high 60s. On the drive in to work today (first trip with the grill block), the WAI temps were steady in the low 80s with a high of 85F. Ambient temp was 30F.

You do some nice work Daox. Have you decided if you were going to develop a front strut bar? Just wondering.

I think there is a good chance that I will. I'm not exactly sure when though. It would be a very fun project.
